Be it known that I, PETER STEIGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, State of Maryland, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trunks, of which the following is a specification. Y

My invention relates to improvements in tray-supports for trunks'of that class in-which the tray is elevated fromwithin the body of the trunk simultaneously with the raising of the trunk-lid.

The invention isv illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 isa perspective view of -a trunk embodying my invention and shows the lid and tray in the elevated position. Fig. 2. is a perspective view of the horizontal traycal sectional detail, on a larger scale, ofaportion of the box and lid of the trunk when the latter is closed and shows the relative position of the tray and its supporter.

In the drawings, A designates the box of the trunk having the end walls a, and A designates the lid having the end Walls a'. The box and lid of the trunk maybe constructed in any suitablemanner and the trimmings,

and fastenings varied to suit the price and the taste of the manufacturer. Pivoted to each of the end walls a of the box are two A levers b'and'b", the latter being longer than the former, and near their upper ends these levers are connected by a horizontal bar c, having a laterally-projecting hook c. at its forward end for a purpose to be hereinafter described.

The horizontal bar 0 is preferably pivoted to the upper end of the leverb and is also pivoted near the upper end of the lever b, so that said levers and bar may all swing together. The bar o is provided at its outer vertical side with a plurality of laterallyprojecting lugs d, which project and rest upon the top edge of trunkbox A when the lid is closed. These lugs (Z, as will be seen in Fig.

d 1, have position on the bar at opposite sides of the longer lever b.

The tray F is provided along its opposite ends with a horizontal plate f, which has at its upper edge a downwardly-projecting hookflangef, which takes over the top edge of the horizontal bar c and entirely supports the tray. The hook c' at the forward end of said bar takes around the corner of the tray and holds the latter from sliding forward. By this construction of hook-flange f and lugs d it will be seen that no stationary support is necessary within the body of the trunk for the tray F to rest on when the lid is closed, as

seen in Fig. 3.

The end walls a' of the trunk-lid Al are each provided with a plurality of notches g, which receive the lugs d when the lid is closed down -on the box, as clearly seen in Fig. 3.

It will be seen that when the lid and tray are lowered the lugs (l will take over the top edge of the end walls a of the body and the vnotches g will take down over lugs and alsol that the bar c and tray are thus supported or sustained in the trunk-box by said` lugs.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new,vand desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination with the box of a trunk; a lid hinged to said box; a plurality of levers pivoted to said box at opposite ends of the latter; a bar pivotally connecting said levers and provided with a plurality of laterally-projecting lugs whichare adapted to engage said trunk-box when the lid is closed, and a tray provided at each end withmeans for engaging said bar. l

The combination with the box of a trunk; a lid hingedto said box; two levers pivoted to said box at each end and one of said levers IOO being longer than the other; a link connection pivoted to said longer lever and also to the trunk-lid; a bar connecting said two levers; a tray; and a plate secured to opposite ends of said tray and having a iiange which takes over said bar.

3. The combination with the box ofa trunk; a lid hinged to said box and having a plurality of notches in its ends; a plurality of levers pivoted to said box at opposite ends of the latter; 'a bar pivotally connecting said levers and provided with a plurality of lugs which engage said trunk-box when the lid is closed and which fit into the notches in said lid; a

tray, and a plate secured to each end of said tray and having a downwardlyprojecting hook-flange which takes over said bar whereby to support the tray at all times between said bars.

4. The combination with the box of a trunk; alid hinged to said box; a plurality of levers pivoted to said box at opposite ends of the latter; a bar pivotally connecting said levers and a tray provided at each end with a plate having a hook-flange which engages said bar whereby to support the tray.

5. The combination with the box of a trunk; a lid hinged to said box; a plurality of levers pivoted to said box at opposite ends of the latter; a bar pivotally connecting said levers and provided with a plurality of lateral lugs which rest on said trunk-box when the lid is closed and a tray provided at each end with a plate having a hook-llange which'takes over said bar to support said tray.
