Be it known that I,Josn1 I-I TAYLOR, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing' at 62 Adswood Lane, E., Stockport, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hats, of which the following is a specification. l

This invention relates to a combined ventilator and head-grip forhats; and the object of the invention is to provide a hat with an improved device for Ventilating and at the same time comfortably fitting and adapting itself to the head of the wearer.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an under side view of a hat supplied with my improved device entirely around its inner edge. Fig. i2 is a sectional view on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. l, but of a modification with the device attached to but a portion of the inner edge of the hat. Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view on line 4L 4, Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail View showing the special fabric tape which I use in carrying out this invention.

As shown in Figs. l and 2, one edge of a long strip of tape T is provided with laterallyprojecting cords C, preferably joined together at their outer ends by a common uniting-cord E, parallel with the tape, as shown in Fig. 5. I attach this cord E, as by stitching, to the inner lower edge of the crown, preferably entirely around the hat. I sew the two ends of the tape T together where they join, so as to cause the endless tape thus formed to have a lesser perimeter than the interior of the crown of the hat. By this means the tape is caused to stand out ashort distance from the crown in a tensioned condition, as shown in Fig. l, leaving a space for the passage of air and producing a more or less elastic band, to which the hat sweat-band B may be attached. As this tape is slightly elastic, the hat sweatband will give to a slight degree when a hat supplied with the device is placed on ones head, and the band will adapt itself to and will grip the head with a firm but perfectly comfortable hold.

I have shown this device as applied to straw hats, where it will be of great service; but it is equally applicable to other hats.

In Figs. 3 and 4 I have shown the tape T as inserted for a short distance in the front of the crown only. In this modification the ends of the tape are drawn tight and sewed to the hat at m a', so that the length of tape between .fr m will be less than the length of inner rim edge secured thereto at intervals, the cord being secured to the hat and the tape held a slight distance away from the hat, substantially as described.

2. A hat having a combined ventilator and head-grip comprisinga tape having a corded edge secured thereto at intervals, the cord being secured to the hat and the tape being joined together at its ends and of less perimeter than the inner edgeof the crown, substantially as described.

3. A hat with a sweat-band, a tape secured to the inner side of the sweat-band, a cord secured to the hat and connecting-cords between the aforesaid cord and tape, said tape being' tensioned, whereby tape and sweat-band are held a distance from the hat, substantially as described.

4.. A hat having a ventilator and head-grip, comprising a sweat-band of less perimeter than the inner crown of the hat, a tape secured to said sweat-band and a number of cords on said tape attached to said crown at intervals, whereby Ventilating-space is provided between the hat and sweat-band, substantially as described.

5. A hat having aventilator and head-grip, comprising a sweat-band of less perimeter than the inner crown of the hat, a tape seto this specification in the presence of two subeured to said band and having a, series of cords seribing witnesses. on its edge secured at their other ends to the hat, whereby a Ventilating-space is produced 5 between the band and hat, substantially as Vitnesses:
