PATENT OEEICE.
RECORD-LEAF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,679, dated May 10, 1904.
Application filed February l, 1904. Serial No. 191,573. (No model.)
To all whom t mur/y concern:
Be it known that I, EnNEs'i VVELLs CRUIK- si-IANK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Record-Leaf, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a record-leaf combined with communication-blanks; and the principal object of the invention is to provide, in combination with a plurality of invoiceforms, letter-heads, note-heads, or the like, a record-leaf so arranged relatively7 to the invoice-forms or letter-heads that carbon copies may be made directly upon both sides of the record-leaf when the invoice-'forms or letterheads are used and the record-leaf bearing the carbon transcripts on both sides be then separated from the invoice-'forms or letterheads and filed in a suitable binder as a daybook or journal leaf.
As is well known, the ordinary procedure in recording the shipments of goods is to make out the invoice in copying-ink, to take a letter-press copy from the invoice after it is filled out, and then copy from the letter-press copy of the invoice into the day-book or journal. This mode of procedure is tedious and is also objectionable, because the letter-press copies made from the invoice are often so indistinct that it is extremely diiiicult if not impossible to make entries therefrom into the day-book or journal without error. It is therefore extremely desirable to provide some means whereby at the time the invoice is made a duplicate thereof may be made upon the leaf of the day-book or journal. The device forming the present invention, and hercinafter fully described and claimed, forms means whereby the desired record may be ob- -tained when the invoices or letters are written out, and when the invoices or letters are detached from the record-sheet it will be ready for filing in a binder. The posting of the accounts to a ledger may then be made directly from the record-sheet in the day-book or journal, and no copying from a letter-press copy of the original invoice or letter necessary.
In describing the invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which I have illustrated an embodiment of the invention in which the record-sheet is 'combined with invoice-forms; but it is obvious that the ruling of the invoice-forms and the recordsheet may be varied without departing from the invention and that the device may so be adapted for use in record ing letters instead of invoices.
In the drawings, Figure l is a frontview of the record-leaf with the invoice-forms attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a rear View of the record-leaf with the invoice-forms attached thereto. Eig. 3 is an end view of the recordleaf with the invoice-forms folded thereon in position to receive copying-sheets between the forms and the record-leaf.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the record-leaf, preferably provided with openings B B near one margin to receive the securing members of a suitable binder and being numbered at the upper corner opposite the binding-margin. As both sides of the record-leaf are to be made use of, one side is numbered 1 and the other side .is numbered 2. At each side of the record-sheet and separated thercfrom by a row of perfor-ations C there are arranged a plurality of invoiceforms I). The invoice-:forms at the right side of the leaf are printed on the front surface and those upon the left side of the sheet are printed upon the rear surface, so that when the combined structure is folded, as shown in Fig. 3, the record-leaf is interposed between the two sets of invoice-forms.
Each invoice-'form is separated :from the adjacent invoice-form by rows E of perforations perpendicular to the rows C, and when the invoices are iilled out they are detached by tearing along' the lines of perforations in the usual manner.
In making out invoices and making records thereof at the same time a carbon-sheet is placed between one set of forms and the record-sheet, and the invoice-forms of that set are then lilled out with pen, pencil, or type-writer, as may be preferred. The invoices beingl filled out, the sheet of carbon-paper is removed-:from between the 'forms and therccord-leaf and the invoices are separated from the record-leaf by tearing along the lines (l of j ierforations. The other set of invoice-forms will then be IOO filled out in a similar' manner, a sheet of carbon being interposed between the forms and the other side of the record-leaf. All the invoice-forms having been filled out and detached from the record-leaf, duplicates of the invoices will be presented upon the two sides of the record-leaf and the leaf will then be ready for filing within the temporary binder in lieu of an ordinary day-book leaf.
When the record-leaf is combined with noteheads, bill-heads, or letter-heads, the mode of using the device is precisely similar, except that instead of invoices letters, bills, or other communications will be written.
While I have shown the invention as embodied in a device in which each record-leaf is associated with siX invoice-forms, three upon each side of the leaf, it is obvious that the leaf may be made smaller or larg'er, as desired, and the number of forms associated therewith varied to suit the circumstances of any particular case. Thus it may be desirable to provide only one invoice-form on each side of the record-leaf, or, on the other hand, it may be desirable to provide half a dozen forms on each side of the leaf.
Having thus described the nature and use of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*
A record-leaf similarly ruled upon the reverse and obverse and having attached thereto at opposite sides a plurality of sheets separated from the record-leaf by weakened lines, one of said sheets being provided upon the obverse with printed matter and the other sheet being provided upon the reverse with printed matter.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
