MANIFOLDING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 23, 1907.
Application filed March 29, 1906. Serial No. 308,662.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS WINKELMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hoboken, in the county I of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented cer- Devices, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to manifolding devices, and the object thereof is to provide a device of this class by means of which an original entry made upon one section of single sheets may easily be duplicated upon another section of the same sheet by means of one writing; and another object being to provide a device which is rapid and accurate in its manipulation and avoids waste of copying material such as is encountered in other devices for similar purposes now in use.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which;
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved manifolding device; Fig. 2 a similar view of the folded carbon paper sheet which I employ and showing the entire sheet and a portion thereof on an enlarged scale; Fig. 3 a view similar to Fig. l but showing the manifolding device containing a number of blank sheets ready for use; and, Fig. 4 a sectional view on the line 4 l of Fig. 3 and on an enlarged scale.
My improved manifolding device comprises a top sheet or board a and a bottom sheet or board f, said sheets or boards being connected at one edge by a flexible strip 9 so as to form, in effect, a hinge. The top sheet or board a is provided at its front or free edge with a cut-out 11 forming an oblong space and two parallel side arms or projections a connected at their ends by a metal strip 0 preferably composed of steel and .which closes the space 01' cut-out b, and the front or outer edge of which is flush with the front or outer edgeof the arms or projections a of the top sheet or board a.
The free or front edge of the bottom sheet or board f projects beyond the free or front edge of the top sheet or board a, and by separating said sheets or boards slightly a space e between the same is formed in which, in practice, are placed printed forms or blanks such as way-bills, delivery sheets or other blanks of similar kind asindicatcd at i, and said blanks can be inserted entirely into the space e when the manifolding device is not in use, but when said device is in use said blanks are placed in position as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, in
' which position they extend to the free edge of the bottom sheet or board f and into the cut-out or space I).
When the sheets or blanks i are placed in this manner onehalf of said sheets or blanks project beyond the strip 0 while the other half is situated in the cut-out or space I) or directly beneath the same. tain new and useful Improvements in Manifolding A carbon copying paper it of good quality folded as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4 is slipped over the strip 0 so as to cover the cut-out or space I) and is fastened down securely by means of the fastening device L as shown in the drawing or in any other suitable manner which will accomplish this object securely and easily.
The folded carbon copying paper It is composed of two sections, one section being a sheet m of carbon paper with the face downwardly and the other section being a sheet of thin strong manila or other non-copying paper 11., both being joined together at 0 as shown in the enlarged part of Fig. 2. When it is desired to use this device, the uppermost sheet of the blanks or forms 1' is folded over as illustrated in Fig. 3 and so that the folded part will lie upon the folded copying sheet k, and the blanks or forms 1' which are usually provided with ruled spaces, if of the nature of way-bills or delivery sheets, can now be rapidly filled out and the pencil or pen making such entries thereon will at the same time make a similar impression upon the lower half of the sheet by means of the interposed carbon copying sheet.
After filling out the form or blank the same is withdrawn and the next form or blank is ready for use and is folded in the manner above described. In folding down the successive forms or blanks 1' over the strip 0, each form or blank will be sufficiently scored along its middle part to permit of an easy separation of the two halves thereof as will be readily understood, one half forming the original and the other half the copy.
I am aware that manifolding devices of this class have heretofore been used, but such devices involved in their use the folding of blanks or forms and the plac ing of carbon sheets in each of said blanks or forms so folded, and after making the entries it was necessary to remove said carbon sheets, and in many instances the loss incurred by this use of the carbon sheets and the continual handling thereof was very considerable, but with my improvement all these objections are avoided as will be readily seen for the reason that one sheet of carbon paper can be used for making a great number of copies, and the manipulation of the device is made more rapid, clean and economical, and my improved manifolding device is especially adapted for use in delivery offices of express companies, railways and the like where such copying and duplicating devices are constantly required.
It will also be apparent that my improved manifolding device may be used for many purposes other than those herein specified, such as for copying letters or making notes on blank paper when it is deemed desir= able to retain an original copy of the same, and for many other purposes,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is;
1. A manifolding device, comprising a top sheet or board and a bottom sheet or board, said sheets or .boards being flexibly connected at one edge, and the top sheet or board being provided in the free edge thereof with a cutout forming an opening, and the bottom sheet or board being extended beyond the free edge of the top sheet or board.
2. A manifolding device, comprising a top sheet or board and a bottom sheet or board, said sheets or boards being flexibly connected at one edge, and the top sheet or board being provided in the free edge thereof with a cutout forming an opening, and the bottom sheet or board being extended beyond the free edge of the top sheet or board, and a transverse member connected with and parallel with the free edge portion of the top sheet or board and bridging said opening.
3. A manifolding device, comprising a top sheet or board and a bottom sheet or board, said sheets or boards being flexibly connected at one edge, and the top sheet or board being provided in the free edge thereof with a cuts out forming an opening, and a transverse member connected with and parallel with the front edge portion of the top sheet or board and bridging said opening.
4. A manifolding device, comprising a top sheet or board and a bottom sheet or board, said sheets or boards being flexibly connected at one edge, and the top sheet or board being provided in the free edge thereof with a cutseems out forming an opening, a transverse member connected with and parallel with the front edge portion of the top sheet or board and bridging said opening, and a folded carbon sheet placed over said member and substantially filling said opening and secured to the top sheet or board.
5. A manifolding device, comprising a top sheet or board and a bottom sheet or board, said sheets or boards being flexibly connected at one edge, and the free edge of the bottom sheet or board being projected beyond the free edge of the top sheet or board, the free edge of the top sheet or board being provided with a cut-out forming an opening, and a blade member connected with and parallel with the free edge portion of the top sheet or board and bridging said opening space.
6. A manifolding device, comprising a top sheet or board and a bottom sheet or board, said sheets or boards being flexibly connected at one edge, and the free edge of the bottom sheet or board being projected beyond the free edge of the top sheet or board, the free edge of the top sheet or board being provided with a cut-out forming an opening, a blade member connected with and parallel with the free edge portion of the top sheet or board and bridging said space, and a sheet of carbon folded over the blade member and filling said opening and secured to the top sheet or board.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 22nd day of March 1906.
