To ALL'WHOM vrr MAY CONGERN:
'Be itl known that'we, CHARLES MERR'IAM and CURTIs O. LUCE, of Brandon, in the county of Rutland, and Y State of Vermont, "have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Stamps for post-marking letters, &c.; and we do hereby declare. that thefollowing is a. full, clear, and exact description o''the construction and operation of the same, referencebeing had to theac'companying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereoii. n t
*Similar letters of reference refer to vcoi-"responding parts in the several figures. Figure 1is a: side view of the stamp. l Figure 'is a side view with c'ap C. removed. V Figure 3 is ain end view showing the stamp adjusted for making the impression.
Figure 4 is an end view with the vcap Diremoved. Figure 5 shows the inside of the capfC withthe wheel M attached. Figure '.6 shows'f the ca'p C without the wheel M; `and Y Figure-7 showsthe inside of one of -the annular plates .composing the type-wheel A A".
Figure 8 is the `same as'the upper part of fig. 2, with Athe addition of the capi) D and returmcam e el, l
showing their relativi: positions. Y
Our invention relates to that class of hand-stalmps in which circularl type-wheels are employed, and consists principally'in providing a double type-wheel so' -constructed as to carry a sufficient number of type to represent eachtday of themonth, said type being' so oonstruc'ted'as to be readily taken out andrcplaced, and` easily brought into a position 'tobe used.
In combination with' this doubletypewheel, another single typefwheel is used, having. twelve,si.des,'with `raised letters to represent eac'hmonth of theyearg. and also,'in combination with both type-wheels, is a cap with Vraised letters and figures, showing the name of the post-oiice andState, with the current'year; the whole con stitutin'g a cheap, durable, and readily-adjusted hand-,stamp for post-marking letters, or for other uses where a.
attached," as 'shown indig. 3.
stamp is required.'
v This stampma'y be sc constructed as to` be used as a ribbonstampfand may have a cancelling-stamp The vmnstruction*and operation of our invention are as follows: .Referring to the drawings, gfZshows the double type-wheel, placed within the case E,.to which the bander vprojection is'attached, for the purpose of holding the type iti-place The type-wheel A A is composed of tiro annular plates, held together by th rivets` r 'r r. lThese plates aremnde with radial grooves on the inside, corresponding with the projections on the type tt t. Insidefof, the type-wheel 1A A', und attached to the case D by means of the screw it, is the cam m, by
-meansof'whioh the tylrxt-,hnving en its face the number of the day of thermonth, is raised to its proper position. I
The type-wheel A A is turned by akey fitted tc Vthe axis P of'A a pinion working in the annular plate Af. As
the wheel A A is turned, lthe type ttt arc raised by the cam m to the proper position, where they are held,v
while the stamp is'being used, by the spring-catch s, operating on the-pinion p'. When it is desired to change the date, the typefwheel isturned till thettype that has been in use drops down out ofthe wayfand the next is 4raised to the level of the faceof thetstamp ready for' use. v
For marking the months, we place next to the type-wheel A A another wheel, M, with twelve sides, upon which are raised letters representing cach month in the year. This wheel'has a. circular projection, z', corre sponding tot-:he circular groove o in the cap C, by which it is held in proper position, and has, on its inner edge, cogs for the pinion g. The pinion g has a hollow axis, and lits upon the axis-ofV the pinion p, when the two wheels are puttogether. The spring-catch w 4is attached to the cap G, and holds the wheel M in placewhile I being used forA stamping. The wheel M is operated by a key iitting upon the arbor of pinion g, In lig. 4, the two type-wheels are placed, together and-put into the case E ready for the cup D, upon which are, raised letters and iigures representing the post-oliice, State, and current year. The two gurcs 67 are placed upon la separate type, made with a shoulder, so as to be removed when it is desired to change the year.
To prevent the type representing the days of the month from falling out Wiliie stamping', tile stra-f) e is inserted; in thecap D, so as to`cover the projection on the side of the type t tt.
Having thus described our improvements, what We claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The double type-wheel A A', constructed and operatingin combination with the cam m', type' ttt,- pinon p, andspring-catch s, substantially as set forth.
2. The cam m, in combination with the return-cam e, when used for the purpose described.
3. The arrangement and combination of the type-wheels A A', type-wheel M, cap C, and case' E, constructedand arranged'substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
