` llc it known that I, THOMAS S. HUDSON, ot' East Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain improvements in VHand-Stanips, of which the following is a full, clear, and exactrdescription, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part, of this specifica tion` in which-#-V Figure 1 is a perspective view of' my improved stamp. Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through the centre of the same. Figure is a vertical section through a portion ot` the casing containing the type-wheels and the shattby which 'they are revolved when required to be adjusted.

Figures 4 and 5 are plans of.' the sides of tht` type-wheels, upon which are stamped thefletters and figures' denoting the monthsand days of' the month.

Figure (i is a perspective view et' one ot' the type-wheels, the side opposite to that bearing the letters or figures `being shown uppermost.

Figure 7 is a view of the spindle by which the type-wheels are revolved. l

)Iy invention relates to that class of hand-stamps in which circulartype-wheels `are employed, and more particularly relates to certain improvements in the stamp for which Letters Patentl ot' the United States were granted to I). I3. IIill. on the ,lith of November, 1L D. 1866. i

In the patented stamp above referred to, thte type-wheels and dials" which indicate the characters ready For stamping the impression, are. made separate and distinct' from each other, the t dials. being fitted over the hubs ot' the type-wheels upon which they-revolve. The object of my invention is to simplify the construction of this stamp b v dispensing with tlie dials, and provide a means whereby the revolution of the wheels necessary to effect their adjustment may be performed in a more convenient and expeditious manner; and my invention consists in revolving both of the type-wheels by the spindle upon which they are placed, and also marking upon the sides ot' the type-wheels the letters and figures to be stamped, and in lconnection therewith providing the easing with holes for exposing to view the letters and 'figures on the sides of the wheels corresponding to those ou the edges of the wheels ready to impart the impression; and my invention furthermore consists in a swinging or sliding key for locking the type-block indicating the year securely in a position 4ready for use.

To enable others skilled in theart to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out. i

In the said drawings, A is the base from which rises the bent arm 13,in a suitable bearing, C, in which slides a vertical plunger. I), which is made hollow for the reception of a spiral spring, a, the bottom of which rests upon apin, I), passing through the plunger into its bearing, by which construction the plunger is retained in a position ready for use, as seen in figs. 1 and 2. In the foot of the plunger is secured a shell or casing, E, of the form shown, and provided with a removable plate, F, to allow of' the admission of the type-wheels G H, which are revolved by the spindle I, which has its bearings in the front and back of thc casing E. The edge of the type-wheel G is provided with the letters indicating the names of the months,-whilc that of the wheel is provided with the figures indicating the days of the month, and the letters and figures corresponding to those on the edges of the wheels are lcgibly marked on the sidcsof their respective wheels, and the particular chai-' aeters corresponding to those ready to be stamped are exposed to view through the aperture c formed in the removable plate F in the front, and through the aperture (l in the back ofthe casing.

. The manner in which the type-whecls are revolved, so as to bring the required date into a'position ready to impart the impression, will now be described. The sides of" the wheelsV opposite to those which bea-r the sca-les indicating the letters and figures to be stamped, are provided with notches, c, which extend only partially through the thickness ot' each of' the wheels, and the spindle I is provided with a projection,f, which itswithin the 'notches e, by which means either wheel may be revolved when desired by operating the spindle. The wheel II (bearing the figures representing the days of the months) may be revolved, without revolving the wheel G, by the spring y, which surrounds that portion of the spindle I, on the outside of the front of the casing, and serves to draw the projection f into the notches c on the wheel H, the spindle being kept in place within its bearings in the easing by a lscrew, l. When it is desired to revolve the wheel G without'revolvingthe wheel II, the

which passes entirely through the side of the wheel H, by which construction the projection f will be disengaged freni the notches e in the wheel H, aud enter one of the notches e in the wheel G, and revolve it, the spindle I turning` freely within the wheel H 'without causing it to rotate. Vhen the type-wheels are adjusted in their proper position for stamping the desiredV characters, they are prevented from revolving by the following means; Between the character-sou the edges of the wheels are formed notches,f, into which the endsl of the bent springs m catch, and thus retain the wheels when the stamp is adjustedfor use, an aperture, n, being made in the side of the casing to allow of this being done. The construction and arrangement ofthe device for holding the type indicating the year will now be described. \Vithin the front ot' the casing, immediately under its centre, is formed a recess o, (see tig. 1,)t-l1c sides of which are bevelied inward for the reception of a typcr block, K, correspondingly bevelled, and bearing the gures indicating the year to be stamped, which is securely held in place by a key, L, which is pivoted at its upper end around the spindle I, so that when swung into the position seen in section, gf, the front portion P of the key'L will come in contact with the front of the type'- block 7c, while a projection, q, fits downupon its top, thereby preventing any lateral or vertical motion. r is a circular recess in the casing, in which the projection q moves when the key L is swung to one side to remore the type-block 7c; s is a plate which bears the types'whieh indicate the name of the person, place, or thing, the impression of which is to be constantly stamped, and is therefore intended to remain permanently nvplace, a screw, 8, being employed to fasten it to the lowerend of the easing. The interior'of this plate s is made hollow, to :illow space for the reception of the lower ends of the type-block K, and type-wheels G H, and allow these wheels to revolve freely therein. M is the type-bed, which is loosely pivoted at t to the base A, in order that its upper surface may yield to conform to the surface ofthe types which are'to stampthe impression. N is the inking-ribbon, rolled around the rods u, having their bearings in the centre of the boxes O, and operated in a well-known manner. I

Claim.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. Operatiugboth of the type-wheels `Gr H by their spindle I, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.V

2. I also claim the typewhels G H, provided with notches e, in combination with the spindle I, with its projectionj` and spring g, operating substantially as and forthe purpose s'et forth.

3. I also claim the type-wl1eels.GH, with the characters marked on their sides, substantially as described, in combination with a casing, E, provided with its holes c d, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.v

4. I also-claim the key I), or its equivalent, for locking the typc-block K in place, substantially as described.
