SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 227,603, dated May 11, 1880.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES G. WILsoN, of Washington, in the county of Washington and District of Columbia, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Self-Inking Adjustable Stamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference'marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a front view of this invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse lvertical section of the same and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the prism or adjustable bearing for the bands.
This invent-ion has relation to dating and numbering stamps in which the stamp revolves'to effect an automatic inking.
The nature of the invention consists, in a han d-stam p, of an oscillatin g self-inkin g stamping-plate working in connection with an inking-pad support and having the adjustable printing-hands and the bearin-gs therefor secured to or forming a part of said plate7 as hereinafter shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the ordinary pad-support, having the slotted standards B and studs a; and H indicates the bracket-handle, carrying the pivoted stamping-plate C, Which is provided with teeth b, to engage the studs a on the standards B and turn the plate C over as the handle is pressed down in the ordinary manner.
A spring, D, serves to raise the plate C and its handle automatically, thereby bringing said plate in contact with the inking-pad by its face or printing side, which is turned up by the action of theA studs t operati'ng upon the teeth I).
The stamping-plate C is slotted at c to receive a block or bearing, d, which extends through said slot to the face of the plate, and is provided with a plane bearing-face, e. On each side of this block or bearing the slot is open, as shown at g.
At each end of the slot a post or bearing, h, is secured at the back of the plate, and in the outer ends of these bearings are located the studs or lugs Z, at the ends ofthe adjustable prism- E, over which pass the adjustable -bands pass around the prism-bearing and around the bearing-block d, and when properly adjusted on the face e thereof form the stamping date or number.
By adjusting the bands any date or number 4 wit-hin the limits required for practical purposes can be set up on the face e of the bearing-block d.
Usually the lugs l at the ends of the prismbearing are squared, and are set in squared seats s, for the purpose of fixing the position of the bands with greater certainty and security; but it is apparent that a revolving cylinder-bearing will serve an excellent purl pose.
In these constructions the serial printing devices andl their bearings, which extend downward from the back of the stamping-plate when the latter is up against the inking-pad, are designed to turn automatically out of the way when said plate is revolved down.
I am well aware that the ordinary oscillating self-inking stamps are made with slotted pad-supports, oscillating stamping-plates, and raising-springs, and I make noclaim to such devices. Nor do I/claim endless printingbands or serial printing-disks; but

The hand-stamp consisting of the frame, the ink-pad at the upper end thereof, the oscillating iixed matter-plate having a slot at its middle, a bearing extending through said slot, a bearing parallel thereto, and endless dating-bands passing around said bearings,
