Be it known thatI, GEORGE KIssAM CooKE, of the city of London, England, have in vented a new and useful improvement in, or applicable to dating and other stamp mechanism or device, and in iiexible high type to `be used therewith ,for which Letters Patent were granted mein Great Britain, dated the 23d of November, 1878, and numbered 4,7 73 of said year, and my invention is particularly described andascertained in and by the following specification, reference bein ghad to theV accompanying drawings, and to the figures and letters marked thereonthat is to say: v i
This invention relates to improvement on dating and other hand stamp mechanism or device wherein it is vrequisiteIto change the date, number, -or'device by means of adjustable flexible type constructed or formedtof indiarubber or other iiexible material arranged in a suitable frame, the object being to conveniently and accurately adj ust the type for stamping or printing either separately or in connection with a fixed iieXible `or other stereotyped die.
My improvement particularly consists in the combination, with one or more adjustable series of high types,co11structed of rubber or` other flexible material, of a guide-plate formed with a beveled slot fitting the said types, so as to justify the same accurately in line with each other, or in therequired correspondence with marks or characters on a fixed plate, with which said adjustable types may be used, as hereinafter set forth.
In carrying my invention into practice Ii said slot, at its outer face or opening, corresponds in width with the thickness of the body of the adjustable flexible type or types, which said type or types is or are so held in position by the said conically-slotted guide-plate that they remain in a direct straight line at right angles to the surface of the slotted guide-plate, the slot whereof acts as a justifier of the line of types, such as, for instance, the figures and letters indicating a date, so that the types'will,
when heldlin such position, give off' a perfect impression not only ofthe said type or types, but also of any letters orfigures which inthe form ot' astereotyped die surround the slotV and adjusted type or types, and are secured upon the outer surface of the 4slotted guide plate, the printing-surface of said die4 being on a plane with the printing-surface ofthe adjustable type.
The improved iiexible high typewhicll l have invented consists of solid blocks, upon the upper face of which is formed thegure, letter, or devicei. e., the type-#and which said blocks are joined orv connected together at their base by an endless flexible band orstrip; orfsuch types may be placed in a groove in the 'bottom of the stamp-frame abofe the slotted guide-plate, said types having two, three, four,
or more faces, and connected together at their base to fornidouble-faced blocks or clusters of types, presenting anV appearance similarto the spokesof a carriage-wheel, and a central hole `equivalentltothe axle-hole in the' hub of a wheel will be arranged centrally "through the block, joining the types together, and equidistant from the face of the type to admit of a pin ora-xle attached to the inner frame of the stamp, and around which pin the desired tigures,v numbers, or expressions may be rotated in'to position for entering the slotted guide.- plate. Again, types similarly constructed to thosealready described, but Without the cen- Y tral opening, may be secured by being slipped in sidewise in a slot in the type-carrying frame, which will also allow that the flexible types may be conveniently removed and other requisite numbers,letters, or figures, or expressions be replaced in position for entering the conically-slotted guide-plate.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of dating stamp tted with the continuous bands of high type constructed according to this invention, and showing the slo-ttcdgndeplateopen; Fig. 2, a central section at line x :v of Fig. l.
A is the main frame, with handle, cross-bar, side plates, cover, and rolls, upon which the bands of type are mounted and are free. to be IOO slotted guide-plate C. D is the beveled or conically-shaped guide of the plate C, which is clearly shown in Fig. 2. E is a projection or ear raised on plate U, through a tapped hole wherein works the locking-screw E. When all are adjusted in position the end of screw E engages with the indentation E2 on Aside plate of frame. F represents the stereotyped die on the slotted guide-plate.
The arrangement of apparatus shown in Figs. 3 and 4 is somewhat similar, but modited for the reception ot the clusters of types hereinbefore described, and illustrated in Fig. 5, which shows four arrangements ot' the said types. In Fig. 3 the cover of the frame A is broken away for purpose of illustration, and at B is hinged (in the-snugs of hinge B) the pin or axle, upon which are mounted, accordin g as required, the types as shown in Fig. 5.
The opposite side plate of the frame A is slotted vertically to receive the outer end of the type-carrier axle, and the locking screwear E of the slotted guide-plate C has an extension or shoulder at E3, which, when plate C is adjusted, butts against the extremity of the type-axle and holds same rmly in its slot in the side frame.
The other letters in these figures indicate corresponding parts to those described in Figs. 1 and 2.
In Sheet 2 of the drawings the improved band-type is shown mounted upon a carryingframe telescoping in the side frame and in the handle of the stamp, said frame being acted upon by a spiral spring from above.
Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the apparatus with a set of the solid high type of the bands of types entered through the slotted guidepla-te C and its surrounding stereotyped die F, ready for use. Fig. 7 is an end View of Fig.

In Fig. 9 the telescoping inner type-carrying frame is shown drawn back against the spiral spring, so as to withdraw the high bandtypes from the justifying-slot of plate G, so as to leave the types free to be adjusted. When the frame is released the types previously adjusted in line will enter the slot of plate C, and the surfaces will be presented on a plane with the face of the stereotyped die F, and the line of types will be justified by the slot.
In this arrangement the conically -slotted guide-plate C, instead of being hinged, as previously shown, is attached by screws or rivets' B E to the lower extremities of the stampframe A, other parts corresponding to those previously described being marked with similar letters of reference.
The ever-present difficulty of adjusting and maintaining separate figures, letters, or expressions in a direct straight line one with the other, is in my device avoided by the conically-beveled slotted die-plate automatically adjusting the said type.
I claim- A stamp constructed with one or more adjustable series of high types connected at their bases and capable of movement or ilexure relatively to the band or center by which they are connected, in combination with a beveled guide-plate adapted to automatically justify the type, substantially as set forth.
