UNITED STATES PATENT EErcE.
WILLARD NV. SAVYER, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, AND WILLIAM A. FORCE, OF BROOKLYN, NEV YORK.
HAND-STAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,229, dated November 6, 1888,
Application filed October 12, 1886. Serial No. 215,989.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLARD W. SAW- YER, a resident of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, and
WILLIAM A. FORCE, a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York,
have jointly invented an Improved Hand-` Stamp, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a face View of our improved hand-stamp, the apron or cap being partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a cross section of the same on the line x a?, Fig. l, but showing the printing apparatus reversed. Fig. 3 is a top View, partly in section, of the platen and printing devices of the handstamp in the position represented in Fig. 2. Fig. Ll is a vertical section on the line y y, Fig. 2.
This invention relates to improvements in that class of hand-stamps which carry series of printing or type bands on a revolving printing plate or platen. These type bands in stamps of this character are usually of indiarubber and carry projecting rubber types. Stamps of this class ordinarily have three typebands, one being the day-band, the second the month-band, and the third the year-bandthat is to say, the day-band has types for printing the numerals ofthe days of the month from 1 to 3l, inclusive, the month band carries types expressing the names of the twelve months of the year, while the year-band carries types expressing certain years, and sometimes, also, types expressing such phrases as Received,7 Answered,7 Accepted,7 Entered, 1.3aid,77 Src. It will not be overlooked thatl the day-band of such a stamp has thirtyone types, while the month-band and the yearband need not have more than Vtwelve types each; hence the day-band must be much longer than either of the other bands, or else the types on the month and year bands are unduly spread apart thereon, so that they may be as long as the day-band. When these bands are applied to a handstamp having a revolving platen, the principal difficulty in the way of their employment lies in the greater length of the afore-Y No modeL) The principal feature of our present invention consists in combining the day-band ofsnch a stamp with four carriers, by which it is compacted on the stamp in such manner as to reduce its length, and thereby, also, the length of the stamp.
The second feature of our invention relates to the mechanism, hereinafter described, for adjusting the distance of the printing-type beyond the face of the platen or die-plate, and to other phases of improvement that will be hereinafter more fully specied.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A represents the main carrying-frame of our improved hand-stamp, the same consisting of a handle, a, and lower yoke, b.
B is the vertically-movable lower frame of the stamp, which is straddled by the yoke b,
and which carries the inking-pad d on the under side of its top plate, e.
C is the platen or printing-plate. The ends of this platen are by pins f pivoted in the lower end of the yoke b, while pins q on the frame -B engage wit-l1 projections 71, on the platen for the purpose of revolving the same on its pivots fwhenever the frame B is slid into the frame A from the position shown in Fig. l, or out of it from the position shown in Fig. 2.
The frame B has an upwardly-projecting stem, l,which enters the handle a, that contains a suitable spring for normally holding the frame B in the lower position, which is indieated in Fig. l.
All these parts A I3 C, their connections with one another, and the means employed for turning the platen O do not constitute part of our present invention, but are recognized by us as Well-known contrivances.
The platen C is slotted, as in Figs. 2 and 4, to let the printing-bands be passed through it. These printing-bands D, E, and F are carried in and by a frame, G, which at its ends has projecting ears j, through which are passed screws k, that enter nuts Z, whichv are rigidly attached to the non-printing side of the platen C. The screws k la have heads or shoulders above and below the ears j, so that on turning said screws the frame G will be moved up or down in the platen. This isv for the purpose of making the printing portion of each type IOO band project the exact distance required, and no fart-her nor less, from the printing-face of the platen. This printing-face of the platen has attached to it in all ordinary cases a dieplate, II, of india-rubber or the like, which must be renewed from time to time. The different die-plates H are not always ot' the same thickness, hence the necessity of properly and exactly adjusting the frame .(l, which carries the typo-bands.
The frame tl consists of two side plates, ym, which are connected by a bridge or cross-bar, n, into one rigid structure. Calling that end of the frame G which carries the bridge or cross-bar nthe lower end, (because in printing said bridge is at the lower part of the stamp, asin Fig. 2,) the upper end of the frame G carries two sets of rollers or band-supports, o o. The month and year bands D F are placed over the rollers or supports o 0 and bridge a; but the day-band E, which is longer than the bands D and F, is, between the supports o o, carried down around another roller or support, p, which, as shown in Fig. 4, is hung in projections of the bridge a. Thus the longer dayband, E, being passed under the bridge n and supports o o and p, is compacted into the saine extent as the shorter bands, l) and F.
The upper side of the platen C,calling that the upper side which is such in lig. 2 of the drawings, has also attached to it an apron or cap, I, which incloses the lrame G and the bands D E F and their supports, l'or the purpose of protecting them from dust or the like. On opposite sides this apron has slots or openings (bthrongh which the lingers of the operator can reach portions ot' the bands D E F, l'or the purpose of turning them to bring dit ferent types into the printing` position. Above l and below each of these slots the apron I has on its inner side wipers 1', of l'elt or the like, which wipe the ink ol't' the type that is being moved in line with the slots q.
In order to enable the linger ol' the attend` ant to grasp, when neccssary, themiddle band, l
E, and move the same individually, we have caused the saine to project avery little beyond the bands D F at the place where the slots q are in the housing. This is cffectuated by thickening the rollers or supports o in the iniddle, where the band E passes over them, as shown at s iu Fig. fl. Vv'ere it not for this the operator might have difficulty in attempting to turn the band Fi alone.
NVe elaim-- '1. In a handstamp, the combination ol' the endless printing-band ll with the lower support, a, double upper supports, o o, and intermediate support, p, whereby said band E is doubled or compacted, the support p being directly above the support a, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In al hand-stamp, the combination of the type-band traine G, having lower type-band support, a, double upper supports, o o, and intermediate support, p, with the type-bands D E F, certain ol' said type-bands being laid over three supports, va 0 o, and certain over four supports, n, o 0, and p, substantially as and for the purpose specitied.
3. The combination of the perforated platen C, carrying the nuls Z on its non-printing side, with the type-band-carrying frame G, having lugs j, and with the screws It, having heads above and below the lugs j, swiveled in said lugs, and engaging with said nuts l, as speci fied.
Al. The combination of the slotted apron l with the series ol' type-bands which it incloses, and willi the wipers r r,that are contained on the inner sides ot said apron, as specified.
