Description

J. M. VV'ILLBUR, OFl CLEVELAND, OHIO.
LettersPatent No. 82,461, dated September 22,1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROTARY EMBOSSING-PRESSES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
www
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, J. M. WIL1.BUn,-of Cleveland, county ofCuyahoga, in the State ofOhio, have invented a new and improved Rotary Embossing-Press; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and ex act description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 is a side view of the press.
Figure 2 is a front view of the same.
The nature of this invention consists in .the construction ot' a' rotary embossing-press, in the form of two rollers or cylinders, each working in conjunction by cog-Wheels, the one being provided with movable or changeable stereotype-plates for giving the impression, and the other provided with suitable counter-plates for taking the impression. These plates may consistof mongrams Vor cards of reading-matter, suitable for business-cards, envelopes, 85e. 'lhey may have also changeable type in them for changing dates, making them applicable for cancelling revenue and other stamps.
The rollers may be made to hold several plates, enabling the press to print a number of dilierent styles of, cards, &cf. They are to be used without ink, as they give a very hard and indelible impression. This makes them much more convenient and durable than the presses where ink is used.
In the drawings, A represents the flame, in which are supported the rollers or cylinders B C. These. rollers work in conjunction, by means ofthe cog-wheels B' C', one secured to each of the said rollers, as shown in iig. 2, the rollers having bearings in the sides of the frame.
The roller or cylinder B is provided with movable or changeable stereotypeplates D, tig. 2, for giving the impression, while the cylinder C is provided with suitable movable counter-plates, D', for taking the impression. Secured on the shaft of the roller B, is the l handle or lever E, by means of which the wheels are operated. This handle is provided with apawl or catch,
F, pivoted between the lugs b, the lower end being provided wit-h a pin, i, which extends into openings a in the wheel B.
G is a spring for forcing the pin into the holes in the wheel. Vhen the rollers'are turned partly round, the handle will be. brought in contact with the frame. By relieving the pin, the handle can be turned back, the said pin catching in the next hole in the wheel, and the rollers given another turn, the handle being relieved and broughtback to the next opening, and the rollers turned again. In this way the rollers are operated by means ofthe handle or lever and wheels BC'.
These plates may consist of monogxams or readingniatter suit-able for business-cards, envelopes, Ste., and may also be provided with movable type for changing dates, thus making them applicable for cancelling rev-` enue and other stamps.
The rollers may be made to hold any number ofplates, according to the size of said rollers, which enables the press to print a number of different styles of cards, &c., the press represented being made to print four different styles; but these plates can be removed, and others put in their place, if desired, the said plates being used without ink, as they give a very hard, indclible impression, being more convenient than if ink were used.
'Vhat I claim as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent., is-
1.4 The combination ol' the rollers B G, impressionplates D, and counter-plates D, operated by means of the lever E, through the medium of the cog-whcels B and C', the whole being constructed and arranged in the' manner shown and described, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The lever E, with its adjust-able pawl F, in combination with the rollers B C, arranged to operate as and for the purpose described.
