STOCKING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 757,390, dated April 12, 1904.
Application filed January 31, 1903. Renewed February 26, 1904:. Serial No. 195,475. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LILLIAN OALKINs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stockings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in stockings for childrens wear, and more particularly for boys in short pantaloons; and its objects are, first, to provide a stocking with which the back and front of the legs may be interchanged to avert, as far as possible, wearing them out too rapidly at the knees; second, to avert the necessity of folding one of two stocking-feet upon the same leg, as shown in my application, Serial No. 141,368, filed concurrent herewith, back and up to form the heel, and, third, to increase the wearing qualities of the heels of the stockings. I attain these objects by the arrangement illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whioh Figure 1 is a side elevation of the stocking as woven, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with the foot of the stocking in position to accommodate the foot of the wearer.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout both views.
In the accompanying drawings, A repre sents the leg of the stocking. B B represent the heels, one of which i formed at the front of the stocking and the other at the back, speaking of the stocking when upon the foot or in position to be placed upon the foot of the wearer, and C represents the foot of the stocking, which, as shown, is but a direct continuation of the leg inclosed at the toes. With this construction the foot C may be extended at practically right angles with the leg A from either heel, as indicated in Fig. 2, by simply folding one of the heels back, as at B, to accommodate it to the arch of the ankle. This folding also protects the wear upon the leg at the ankle, and this greatly increases the wearing qualities of the stocking. It will be readily seen that the reversing of the leg made possible by this construction will enable the wearer to alternate the position of the knee from back to front, and thus nearly double the wearing qualities of this portion of the leg, and as simply one heel of the stocking needs to be folded to form the instep instead of the foot to form the heel, as in my application hereinbefore mentioned, two advantages are attainednamely, first, a great saving in yarn or thread necessary for knitting the extra foot, and, second, the increase wear of the fold when folded to form a heel is averted, as is also a thick fold at the heel.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
V 1. "As a new article of manufacture a stocking woven or knit with the foot in direct line with the leg, and opposite heel projections B, B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture a stocking leg and foot woven in direct line and the foot arranged to be folded alternately to reverse the position of the foot portion relative to the leg portion of the stocking, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.-
3. As a new article of manufacture a stocking having the leg and foot in a continuous line with heel projections B B opposite each other the foot adapted to fold from either heel at practically right angles with the leg, and the opposite heel projection adapted to fold over to reinforce the instep of the stocking.
Signed at Grand Rapids, Michigan, J anuary 27, 1903.
