One obj ect of my invention is the provision of a stocking made entirely of textile material cut on the bias.
Another object of the invention is the provision in a stocking of a peculiar and advantageous construction calculated to lend itself to the fabrication of the stocking of material cut on the bias.
Other objects and practical advantages will be fully understood from the following description and claim when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying, and forming a part of the specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a stocking constituting the preferred embodiment of my invention.
Figure 2 is an inverted plan View showing the foot bottom of the stocking,
Figure 3 is a detail perspective top plan View showing the upper portion of the foot of the stocking and the construction at the toe of the stocking,
Figure 1 is an enlarged fragmentary view 25 showing the pattern from which the foot portion of the stocking is formed. I
Figure 5 is a detail of the heel pattern of the stocking,
Figure 6 is an enlarged perspective showing the foot portion of the stocking.
'Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings,
There is shown the complete stocking of my invention in Figure 1.
My invention consists broadly in a stocking made of georgette crepe, crepe chiifon, crepe romaine, net, lace, or analogous flat or pieced goods possessed of suflicient stretching capacity to adapt it for use as a stocking.
In forming my novel stocking of material, such as indicated, the material is cut on'the bias, and unusual grace is imparted to the contour of the leg portion of the stocking. The leg portion of the stocking is designated by 1, and'the edges of the piece of material of which the same is formed are joined by stitching at the back of the stocking and as designated by 2, in Figure 1.
The stocking of my improvement is not 1928. Serial no; 25s,:a4e.
liable to run like the ordinary knit stocking and consequently my novel stocking is adapted to last for a much longer time than the conventional stocking.
The leg portion 1 of my novel stocking is integral with the foot portion designated by 3, and is made separate from the heel portion 1, the heel portion 4 being made by preference in two sections,'such as 5, in Figures 1, 5, and 6. The sections ,5 are preferably though not necessarily of the same material as the leg portion 1 and foot portion 3; and are connected together by the line of stitching 2 continued under the sole of the stocking and are connected to the foot portion by lines of stitching 6 and 7, as shown in Figures 2 and 6.
It will also be gathered from Figure 5 that notches 8 formed in the patterns 5 are connected together by stitching 9, Figures 2 and 6, so as to confer on the patterns 5 the proper 7o shape to snugly receive andfit the heel of a wearer.
The pattern for the foot portion of the stocking is shaped substantially as shown in Figure 4- and in addition to the recesses 9", for the reception of the patterns 5, the foot portion pattern is provided with a forward. upper toe portion 10, tongues 11 at opposite sides of and spaced from said toe portion 10 and sole portions 12 at opposite sides of and so spaced from the tongues 11. Thee-aid sole portions 12 have edges arranged in opposed relation and connected by longitudinal stitching 13 at the sole as appears in Figure 2. The ends of the sole portions 12 are arranged in opposed relation to the end of the toe portionlO and are connected to the portion 10 by a transverse line of stitching 14 as appears more clearly in Figure 6. It will now he noticed that the tongues 11, Figures 1 and 6, rest between the toe portion 10 and the sole portion 12, and that said tongues 11 are connected to the portions 10 and '12 by stitching 15 and 16 respectively, the lines of stitching 15 and 16 eing at opposite edges of the front portion of the stocking, and being merged at their forward ends into converging lines of stitching 17, which in turn are merged into the transverse line of stitching 1 1 as appears at the left of Figure 6. In this connection, 10oit will be appreciated that the forward end of the stitching- 13 terminates at the line of stitching l4, and consequently the toe receiving ortion of the stocking is shaped so as to 5 onform to and snugly receive the toes of a oot.
When deemed expedient, the foot portion of the stocking may be reinforced by material similar to that of which the major portion of the stocking is formed, the said reinforcing material being arranged within the material 1 described and bein connected to the said material by the line of stitching shown by dotted lines in Figures 3, 4 and 6, and designated by 18. The reinforcing material alluded to, is 'not, however of the essence of my invention, and therefore I have deemed it unnecessary to illustrate said reinforcing material in detail.
29 It will be apparent from the foregoing that a good fit may be obtained in a stocking made in accordance with my invention, and it will also be apparent that in addition to possessing good wearing quality, materials such as stated will not only produce a beautiful stocking, but one that will last in good condition for a much longer period of time than a stocking formed of the conventional knitted material.
30 I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the parts in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear and exact undertanding of the said embodiment.
I do not desire, however, to be understoodas limiting myself to the precise construction illustrated and described, my invention being defined by my appended claim within the scope of which modifications may be made,
without departure from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
A stocking formed of piece goods cut on the bias and having a leg portion and an integral foot portion, the leg portion having a line of stitching at the back thereof to join its longitudinal edges, and the foot portion having a top toe portion, sole portion, and tongues between the top toe portion and sole portion and joined thereto by stitching and the longitudinal edges of the sole portion beingj'oined by a longitudinal line of stitches, and heel forming means shaped in conformity to the heel and joined by stitching-to the leg portion and the foot portion.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
' EDITH M. ZINKY.
