WILLIAM G. LLOYD, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PERIODICAL-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters .Patent No. 757,325, dated April 12, 1904. Application filed m 26,1903. SerialNo. 158,826. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. LLOYD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Periodical-Holders; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and usethe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates generally to temporary covers for paper-back books or pamphlets, and more particulary to removable holders especially designed for protecting the current numbers of magazines or other periodicals.
Magazines and other paper back books which are used by a number of personsas, for instance, at the clubs, reading-rooms, and librariessoon become worn and torn unless they are inclosed between durable covers. Consequently it is desirable to provide such books or magazines with removable holders which may be secured around the magazines or books while they are in use and which may be removed preparatory to securing them around other magazines or books.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a removable holder for the purpose above described which may be readily attached to and removed from a magazine or other paper-back book and which will be simple inconstruction, inexpensive, in manufacture, and durable in use.
My invention, generally described, consists in a holder having durable side covers flexibly united to a back, brackets secured to the back near the opposite ends thereof, and a retaining device in sliding engagement with one of said brackets and in detachable engagement with the other bracket, whereby it may be slid through the first bracket, leaving the back of the holder exposed to receive the periodical, after which it may be slid through the book and engaged with the second bracket, thereby securely retaining the back of the book against the back of the cover.
My invention will be more fully described hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which the same is illustrated as embodied in a convenient and practical form, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view showing a book secured within the holder; Fig. 2, a sectional view on line 2 2, Fig. 1-; and Fig. 3, a fragmentary sectional view on line 3 3, Fig.2.
The same reference characters are used to designate the same 'parts in the several figures of the drawings.
Reference character A indicatesthe back of the holder, to the opposite side edges of which are flexibly connected side covers A and A The side covers may conveniently be covered with a fabric or otherflexible covering which surrounds filler plates or boards togive the requisite rigidity thereto. The covering extends around a filler-bar a, located at the back of the holder, and serves to flexibly unite the side covers to the back, as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
B indicates an L-shaped bracket carrying a hook which projects at right angles to the back A. The bracket is secured to the back by suitable fastening devicessuch, for instance,
.as screws 0.
B indicates a second bracket, provided with a perforation therethrough and secured to the back A at the opposite end thereof from the bracket B by suitable fastening devices, such as screws 0.
B indicates a retaining device supported by the brackets and movable with respect thereto. Such retaining device may conveniently consist in a rod of such a diameter that it may freely slide through the opening in the bracket B and may be readily engaged with and disengaged from the hook a. Knobs b b are secured to the opposite ends of the rod B'to prevent the longitudinal movement of the rod when it is engaged with the hook I) on the bracket B. As the knobs Z) are larger in diameter than the hole through the bracket B one of them is made removable, so as to permit the insertion of the rod through the hole in the bracket B d indicates a'flexible reinforcement which extends across the back A and is secured to the adjacent portions of the side covers A and A This reinforcement extends between the portions of the brackets which project at right angles to the back, and thereby covers the bases of the brackets and the screws which pass therethrough, so as to give to the holder a more finished appearance and also for the purpose of preventing the brackets from tearing or rubbing against the paper back of the periodical or book E.
The manner of using my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing de scription and is as follows: When it is desired to inclose a periodical or book in the holder, the end of the rod B is disengaged from the hook b and then slid through the hole in the bracket B so as to leave the back of the holder unobstructed. The periodical or book E is then placed upon the holder and opened near the middle thereof. The rod B may then be moved with respect to the bracket B through the book and engaged at its free end with the hook 6', thereby securely retaining the back of the book between the rod and the back of the holder.
From the foregoing description it will be observed that I have invented an improved periodical-holder which may be readily attached to and detached from a periodical or book and which, though simple in construction, affords thorough protection for the inclosed book, thereby preventing the same from becoming torn or injured by usage and preserving it in suitable condition for a subsequent binding.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a removable holder for periodicals and the like comprising side covers and a rigid back to which the side covers are flexibly connected, a bracket rigidly secured to said back near one end thereof and having a hole therethrough, a second bracket secured to said back near the opposite end thereof and having an open hook thereon, a rod extending through the hole in and longitudinally movable with respect to the first bracket and adapted to be engaged with and disengaged from the hook in the second bracket, and knobs on the ends of said rod of a diameter greater than the hole in the bracket and the opening through the hook, whereby a lateral movement of one end of said rod disengages the same from the open hook on said second bracket and permits the rod to be slid longitudinally through the hole in the first bracket, thereby leaving the back of the holder unobstructed to receive the periodical.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
I WILLIAM G. LLOYD.
