Description

PATENTBD MAR. 29, 1904.
J. H. THORNTON.
CORSET. APPLICATION FILED MAY '12. 1903.
' 110' MODEL.
WITNESSES:
Wm WM.
XW/Q,
UNITED STATES Patented March 129,1904.
i JULIA H. THORNTON, OF PLAINFIELD, NEW JERSEY;
CORSET.-
SPECIFIOATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 755,968, dated March 29, 1904.
Application filed May 12, 1903. Serial No. 156,790- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
ered by the corset and in which the ordinary lace and eyelets therefor are dispensed with.
The ordinary corset in common if not universal use is provided in the back with a lacing string which, passing through metalrimmed eyelets from" top to bottom, secures the two parts of the corset together.' The objection to the string is its tendency to wear and break where it works through the eyelets and its visibility through thin fabrics. The metal eyelets, too, are affected by perspiration, tend to discolor delicate fabrics, and are objectionably visible under tight-fitting gowns.
All of the objectionable features enumerated are eliminated by my invention.
The means by which the several objects of my invention are accomplished may be attached to any corset and constitute in themselves a corset attachment which will secure to the garment to which they are applied the same advantages as would be derivable from the use of the same in connection with a specially-manufactured corset. I attain these objects by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure I is perspective View of my improved device closed as when in use. Fig. II is a view of my complete device spread open.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout both views.
5 is a strap attached at one end to the back piece 24 of one section 2 of a corset at or near the waist-line. 6 is a similar strap attached to the back piece 23 of the counterpart section 1 of thecorset at or near the waist-line.
3 is a secondary strap provided at one end with a series of connecting straps or tapes 19 22, two or more of which, 19, are attached to the back piece 24 of one corset-section, 2, at or near its upper end and two or more of which, 22, are connected to the back piece 24 at or near the lower end.
4 is a secondary strap similar to the abovedescribed secondary strap 3, which is also provided in like mannerwith a series of straps or tapes 20 21, two or more of which, 20, are attached to the back piece 23 of the other corset-section, 1, at or near its upper end and two orjfmore of which, 21, are connected to the back piece 23 at its lower end. I have shown in the drawings three connecting-straps 19 20, respectively connecting the secondary straps 3 4, respectively, to theupper end of the respective corset-sections 2 and 1, and two connecting-straps 21 22, respectively connecting the secondary straps 4 and 3, respectively, to
the lower end of the respective corset-section 1 and 2, for the reason that I find such to be a convenient number. ever, to limit myself to the precise number shown. A greater or less number of connecting-straps may be used when desired.
Upon the rear ends of the secondary straps 3 and 4, respectively, I provide pockets 15 14 and 16 13, respectively, through which are passed the straps 5 and 6, respectively, above described. The straps 3 and 5 are together passed through a slit 12, formed in the lower front of the corset-section 1, and the straps 4 and 6 are together passed through a slit 11, formed in the lower front of the corset-section 2. r
A post or similar device 25 is provided on the outer side of the front of the corset, to which the free ends of the straps 5 and 6 are attached after the corset is placed upon the wearer. A post or similar device 26 is also provided on the outer lower front of the corset, to which the free ends of the secondary straps 3 and 4 are also attached after the corset is placed upon the wearer. I prefer to fasten these straps 3, 4, 5, and 6 by means of eyelets 7, 8, 9, and 10, formed in the respective straps, into which the posts 25 and 26 may be inserted when the several straps I do not intend, howare drawn to a suitable tension; but any other well-known means may be used to fasten the free end of the straps.
The connecting straps or tapes 19 2O 21 22 may be of elastic ornon-elastie material and the tapes of one set are preferably interwoven with the counterpart set, so that they will lie flat and work smoothly together.
The front strips of the corset are provided with the usual eyelets and buttons for fastening the front of the corset-sections together.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim is 1. A corset, composed of a plurality of sections, a plurality of straps, each strap being secured at one end to a section of the corset, a plurality of secondary straps, each of such straps being also connected to a section of the corset, such secondary straps being provided with apertures in which the primary straps lie, apertures in the corset through which to pass such primary and secondary straps, and means for fastening the free ends of the several straps, substantially as shown and described.
2. A corset composed of a plurality of sections, sets of straps secured to said sections, and means for connecting together the straps secured to the same corset-section so that one strap will slide upon the other, substantially as shown and described.
3. A corset composed of a plurality of sections, sets of straps secured to said sections, means for connecting together the straps secured to the same corset-section so that one strap will slide upon the other and means for fastening the free ends of the straps, substantially as shown and described.
Signed at Plainfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, this 5th day of May, A. D. 1903.
JULIA H. THORNTON.
