UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DOROTHY W. CURTISS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
GARMENT-PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 753,474, dated March 1, 1904;.
Application filed March 25, 1903.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DOROTHY W. CURTISS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in thecounty of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Protectors, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved device for the protection of the skirts or lower garments of children while at play at bathing resorts; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a protector of this class and for the purpose specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed. I
It is customary for children, and especially girls, at bathing resorts to play along the beach and in the water without removing their skirts, an effort being made simply to hold the skirts up, so as to prevent them from becoming wet or soiled; and one of the objects of this invention is to provide means whereby the skirt or other lower garments may be automatically held up and also inclosed and protected from dirt and moisture.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which c Figure 1 is a plan View of a garment or clothes protector made according to my invention; Fig. 2, a bottom plan view thereof, and Fig. 3 a view showing the application and operation thereof.
In the practice of my invention I provide clothes-protector which comprises a top portion a and a bottom portion I), which are similar in form, and these parts or portions are made of any suitable flexible material and are preferably made of material impervious to water. The parts or portions a and b are also preferably made circular in form and are stitched or otherwise secured together at their.
Serial No. 149,471. (No model.)
outer edges, as shown at c, and the upper part or portion a is provided with a central circular opening a large enough to permit of the lower extremities and hips being passed therethrough and around which is placed a draw string, cord, tape, or similar device (Z. The bottom part or portion 6 is provided with two closely-adjacent circular openings 6 through which the legs may be passed and around which are preferably placed draw strings,
the thighs, as indicated in Fig. 3. In place of the draw strings, tapes, or cords e elastic bands may be employed, if desired; but I prefer ordinary draw-strings, as they will not be 'destructively effected by water or moisture.
This device is exceedingly simple in construction and operation and may be composed of any preferred material, and by means thereof the skirts and other lower garments may be protected from water, moisture, and dirt and also held in proper shape, so that when the protector is taken off the skirts and other garments will drop into proper position and will not be creased, crumpled, or crushed out of shape.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patents, is
A garment-protector of the class described, comprising similar top and bottom portions of flexible material secured together at their outer edges, the upper part or portion'being provided with a central opening through which the lower limbs and lower part of the body may be passed, and the bottom part or portion being provided With two closely-adjacent ence of the subscribing witnesses, this 24th openings through which the entire lower day of March, 1903.
limbs may be passed, said openings being provided with securing devices, substantially as DOROTHY Q 5 shown and described. Witnesses:
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as J. C. LARSEN,
my invention I have signed my name, in pres- F. A. STEWART.
