' ian, in the county of Lauderdale and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clamps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had` to the accompanying drawings. I
My invention relates particularly to that class of clamps which are used by foundrymen for securing together the sections of flasks.
The invention may also be used by carpenters and others.
The object of the invention is to produce a clamp which is convenientlyvv adjustable so as to vary the distance Ybetween'the jaws andy which can be cheaply manufactured and `readily applied for-use. For foundrymens use the clamp consists of only two pieces, and these pieces may be duplicates of eachother, and said pieces may be ordinary castings, and they need no machine-work or other finishing unless it be cleaning in a tumbler.

Referring to said drawings, l l are the members which constitute the clamp. At one end of each member is a jaw 2, extendinglaterally at approximately right angles tothe body 3.
' At the other end of each member there is an arm 4 extending rearward and then laterally with reference tothe plane in which the body 3 and said jaw lie. The two members are applied to each other with their sides partially overlapping and with their front faces lying in the same plane, the arm 4 of one member extending across and engaging the back of the other member. This makes it necessary that the lateral portion of the arm 4 be located rearward a proper distance to bring its front face rearward approximately the same distance as the back of its member. The front face of Said arm preferably conforms in reverse approximately to the transverse profile of said back. 'The back of each member is prefface extending from near the meeting plane of said members outward and forward and the arm 4 directed forward and outward correspondingly." Thispermits the arm 4 to extend forwardand partially embrace the body -of the adjacent member and restrain lateral movement of said member. The back of each mem? ber is provided with a series of notches 5, adapted to receive the arms 4. Said notches are preferably equally spaced, so that each of said arms 4 may at the same time rest in a notch. When said arms so rest in any of said notches, the two members are held against longitudinal movement upon each other, and the clamp may then be applied to the askand secured in the usual way by wedges. By placing said arms intodiflerent notches 'the length of the clamp may be varied. vSaid notches 5 are preferably formed obliquely, so as to constitute ratchets, the part of each notch toward'the erabl'y provided with an oblique or beveled arm 4 presenting af transverse face 6, adapted toabut against the face of the arm 4, which is directed Ytoward the jaw of its member. Thus there is lno resistance to the movement o f the members over eachV other in the proper direction to cause the jaws to approach each other. Obviouslyarm-engaging means other than said notches may be used.

lany two members that are takenup by the IOC If so desired, two members which are duplicates excepting as to length may be combined to form a clamp. 1 Practice has shown that it is a convenience yto have approximately equal numbers of members of two different lengths; Then from the stock of members the workman can readily assembleclamps of three different average lengths-first, by combining two short members; second, by combining a short and a long member, and, third, by com'` bining two long members. In ordinary foundry practice clamps ranging from eight inches to twenty four inches are needed, and they usually differ only one inch in length. Hence when they are non-adjustable a large number of the clamps mustbe keptin stock. Y

I claim as my invention- 1. A clamp consisting of two overlapping members each having a forward-extending jaw ing across and forward of the rearrnost por# tion of the back of the other of said members,
and suitably-spaced arm-engaging means on' each of said members of less' engagingdepth than the forward extensionof theiarm, sub-Lk stantially as described.
3. A clamp consisting of two overlapping members each having a forward-extending jaw at one end and at its other end an arm extend lng across and forward of the rearmost por tion of the back of the other ofsaid members, and suitably-spaced arm-engaging notches o'n the back of one of said members of lessengaging depth than the forward extension of the arm, substantially asdescribed.
4. A clamp consisting of'twooverlapping members each having a forward-extending jaw at one end andat its other end an arm extending acrossand forward of the rearmost portion of the back of the other of said members, and suitablyspaced arm-engaging notches on Vthe-backs of said members of less engaging depth'th'a'nthe forward extension of the arm, substantially as described.
