WILLIAM JAMES ROGERS, OF IPI-IENIX, VIRGINIA.
BLACKSMITHS TONGS.
Specification of'Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. I5, ItIIfi.
Application filed November 30, 1915. Serial No. 64,317.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. Rooms, a citizen of the United'States, residing at PheniX, in the county of Charlotte and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blacksmiths Tongs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in blacksmiths tongs and consists of a simple and efficient device of this nature having various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawlngs, which, with the numerals of reference marked thereon, form' a part of this specification and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of tongs embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through one of the jaws. Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of one of the jaw pieces, the same being shown as slightly removed from its seat.
Reference now being had to the detailsv designed to receive them. It will be noted that these chambers 4, 4 are widest at their bases, thus forming a dove-tailed connection with the jaw piece and holding the same securely within the chamber. It will also be noted that the chambers 4:, 4 are widest at their rear or inner ends and that they taper gradually toward their extreme free ends, so that, when the correspondingly shaped jaw pieces are inserted within the recesses, they are wedged therein and can only be removed by withdrawing inwardly or toward the wide end of the chambers.
6 is a set screw which is passed at an angle upwardly through the head of the jaw and the inner end of the chambers 4:, so that the shank of the screw will bear against the enlarged inner end of the jaw piece and serve to lock the same in position. It will be at once evident that, by removing the set screw from its locking position, the jaw piece contained within the chamber may be removed and a plate of other form adapted to the special use for which the tool is designed for use at the time may be substituted therefor.
What I claim to be new is In a tool of the character described, jaw piece provided with a chamber of greatest width at its base, the side walls being inclined inwardly, the chamber being of wedge shape in horizontal section, a jaw piece corresponding in form to the form of the chamber, and a set screw passed upwardly through the jaw at the inner end of the chamber and adapted to lock the jaw piece in place within the chamber, substantially as shown .and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM JAMES ROGERS.
