CIGAR-BOX.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 748,863, dated January 5, 1904.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT W. HARDIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany and State of NewYork,have invented new and usefullmprovements in Cigar-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has for its object to construct a cigar-box provided with a cover attached thereto in such a manneras to be adapted to be folded under the box without being detached and, when desired held and used in the same position relatively to the box as the covers of boxes of ordinary construction. When boxes of cigars are placed in a showcase, it is desirable to remove the covers so as to expose the contents of the boxes, as with the covers removed the case can be filled to its utmost capacity. If the covers are simply turned back,theylap over onto adjacent boxes and conceal their contents from view and, moreover, present a disordered appearance; but the covers cannot be detached from the boxes without destroying the revenue-stamp, which is required to be applied to and maintained on the box until its contents are sold. It is desirable, therefore, to provide means for removing the covers from view while the boxes are in a showcase without detaching the covers from the boxes.- If the cover of a box be secured to a band of flexible material, which is also secured to the lower portion and free from the upper portion of the box, the cover would be so loosely attached to the box as to make the box awkward to handle and unsightly in appearance when used outside of a show-case. It is essential, therefore, to provide means for securing the cover to a box of this character in such a manner that the cover may be removed from sight while in a show-casewithont being detached from the box or used in its ordinary position relatively to the box when'desired, as when an entire box of cigars is purchased by an individual. To this end I secure a band of flexible material to the cover and to the lower portion of the back of a box and bind the band detachably to the upper portion of the back of the box, so that when so bound the band forms a hinge-joint for the cover and permits the cover to be used in the ordinary manner and in its usual position, and when the band is detached from the upper portion of the box I it may be folded over on itself and the cover placed under the box.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is an end view ofa cigar-box embodying inyinvention, showing the cover partially raised. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view showing the cover folded under the box. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of a box with the cover closed, and Fig. 5 is an end view of the same.

As illustrated in the drawings, B represents a box having a cover A secured to a hingeband C, of flexible material, preferably cloth, the lower portion of which is permanently secured to the lower portion of the back of the box. The band C is not permanently secured to the upper portion of the back of the box, but is bound to such upper portion by means of a stamp D or other auxiliarystrips E, which, extending transversely of the back of the box, are secured to the ends of the hingeband (J and the box B. When so secured, the upper portion of the flexible bandO serves asa hinge for the cover A, which thereby remains in its usual position and may be opened and used in the ordinary manner, and the box in general appearance is substantially similar to those of ordinary construction; but when it is desired to place the box in a show-case and remove the cover from view the auxiliary strips may be severed between the hingeband C and the box down to that portion of the hinge-band which is permanently secured to the back of the box, and the hinge-band being then free from the upper portion of the back of the box may be'doubled over on itself and the cover placed under the box.

While I prefer to bind the hinge-band detachably to the upper portion of the back of the box by means of transverse auxiliary strips which conceal the outer ends of the hinge-band, the hinge-band may be detachably bound to such portion of the box by any other suitable means having similar capabilities.
