SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 748,673, dated January 5, 1904. Application lecl June 15, 1903. Serial No. 161,587. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, AMBRosE P. WARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Central City, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented a newand useful Button, of which the following Vis a specification.
This invention relates to that class of buttons that are employed in connection with collars, ends, or sleeves.
The object is to provide a simple article of this character that is extensible and contractible, so that it may be accommodated to the various thicknesses of the articles to be held, said button having all the advantages of separable and swinging head buttons and being without the worst objection to the former-namely, the liability of the members becoming separated and lost.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a compact and simple combination of elements which will be out of the way, so as to alford a smooth exterior to the article in order that the same may be readily inserted or removed from a buttonhole, said combination, furthermore, not being liable to derangement.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved button. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View through the same., Fig. 3 is another longitudinal section taken in a plane at right angles to Fig. 2. Similar reference-numerals indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawk Walls are provided on their inner faces with inwardly-extending series of teeth 13.
Slidably mounted Within the tubular section 11 is another shank-section 14, which'is also angular in cross-section and fits Within the tubular section, so as to be held against turning therein. This inner'section carries a stop 15, projecting from one face and slidably engaging in the slot 12 of the tubular section, said stop thus limiting the relative movements of the sections and preventing their disassociation. The upper or outer end of the inner section 14 is provided with outstanding journals 16,' and the sides upon which said journals are located are provided with longitudinally-disposed grooves 17, constituting seats for securing devices 18, that are located longitudinally therein and are movable laterally within said seats. These securing devices are provided with outstanding teeth 19, that are arranged to coact with v the adjacent inwardly-extending teeth 13 of the tubular section. The upper ends of the securing devices carry outstanding actuating elements in the form of stems 20, which project through the journals 16 and extend some distance beyond the same, being provided with notches 2l.
Pivoted upon the projecting end of the inner shank-section 14 is a concavo-convex head 22, said head being provided on its inner face with ears 23, that receive the outstanding journals 16. A dat spring 24 is located within the head and has its ends bearing against the inner face thereof, the intermediate portion of this spring being spaced from the head and bearing against the outer end of the inner shank-section 14. A bowed spring 25 has an intermediate portion secured beneath 'one end of the spring 24, as shown at 26,
while'the terminals of this bowed spring are looped about the stems 20 and are engaged in the notches thereof. This bowed spring serves to urge the stems outwardly, ,and consequently holds the teeth 19 thereof in engagement with the teeth 13 of the tubular shank-section.
It Will be observed that in this structure the head can be swung so that it may be readily passed through a bnttonhole without materialinterference,the parts being entirely inclosed. Moreover,the shank can be extended or contracted, as desired, so that it may be accommodated to the different thicknesses of the articles held by the button. At the same time the relative movements of the sections are limited by the stop-pin 15, which is en- ICO tirely independent of the securing means for holding the sections in adjusted position. This stop-pin therefore prevents the disassociation of the sections, so that there is little chance of the button becoming accidentally separated and lost. The parts are comparatively simple and are so arranged that there is little liability of derangement.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction, operation, and many advantages of the herein-described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is y 1. In a button, the combination with nonrotatable slidably-associated shank-sections, of a shoe carried by one section, a head carried by the other section, said head and shoe being movable toward and from each other upon the relative movements of the shanksections, means for securing the sections against relative movement and in different relative positions, and a stop coacting' with the sections and permitting their free relative movement but preventing the disassociation ot' said sect-ions.
2. In a button, the combination with slidably-associated shank-sections, of a shoe carried by one section, a head pivotally mounted on the other section, a securing device carried by one section and engaging the other to hold the sections against relative movements, and a stop separate from the securing device for limiting the relative movements of the sections and preventing their disassociation.
3. In a button, the combination with head and shoe members, of a tubular shank-section carried by one member, another shanksection non-rotatable and slidably mounted therein and carried by the other member, a securing device carried by the inner section and having an adjustable interlockingengagement with the outer section to hold said sections against relative movement and in different relative positions,and a stop carried by one section and having a slidable engagement withthe other to permit the relative sliding movement of said sections and positively hold the same against disassociation.
4. In a button, the combination with head and shoe members, of a tubular shank-section carried by one member and being angular in cross-section, another angular shanksection slidably mounted therein and carried by the other member, said sections being thereby held against relative rotation, a securing device mounted on one side of the inner section and having an adjustable interlocking engagement with the adjacent inner face of the outer section, and a stop carried by another side of the inner section andhaving a slidable engagement with the outer section to limit the relative movement of said sections and prevent their disassociation.
5. In a button, the combination with ashoe, of a tubular shank-section mounted on the shoe and being angular in cross-section and thereby held against relative rotation, certain of the opposite walls of said shank-secy tion having inwardly extending teeth on their inner faces, a longitudinally-disposed slot being formed in one of the other walls, a head, another shank-section carried by the head and slidably fitting in the tubular section, locking devices carried by the inner section and having teeth that coact with the teeth of said tubular section, and a stoppin carried by the inner section and having a slidable engagement in the slot of the tubular section.
6. In a button, the combination with head and shoe members, of a tubular shank carried by one member and having a longitudinally-disposed series of teeth on itsinner side, another shank-section carried by the other member and havingalongitudinally-disposed seat in its exterior face that is alined with the teeth, said latter section being slidably fitted Within the tubular section, and a locking device movably mounted in the seat of the inner section and having outstanding teeth that detachablyinterlock with the teeth of the tubular section.l
7. In a button, the combination with movably-associated shank-sections, of a head, a pivotal connection between the head and one section, and means for holding the sections against relative movement, said means being movable to permit said relative movement of the sections and including an actuating element for thus moving the holding means, said actuating element passing through the pivotal connection.
8. In a button, the combination with movably-associated shank-sections, of a head, an ear mounted on the head and having a pivotal connection with one of the shank-sections, and means for holding the sections against relative movement, said means being movable to permit the relative movement of the sections and including an actuating-stem for thus moving the holding means, said stem passing through the ear.
9. In a button, the combination with a shoe carrying a tubular shank-section, of another shank-section slidably mounted within the tubular section and having outstanding hollow journals, a head having ears that surround the outstanding journals, and securing devices for holding the shank-sections against relative movement, said devices being movable to permit the relative movement of the sections and having outstanding actuating-stems that project through the hollow journals.

ing the sections against relative movement, said means being movable to permit said relative movement of the sections, a head pivotally mounted on one of the sections, and associated springs carried by the head, one of the springs engaging one of the shank-sections to hold the head against its pivotal movement, and the other shank-section engaging the securing means for maintaining said securing means in coacting relation with the sections to hold the latter against relative movement.
11. In a button, the combination with slidably-associated shank-sections, of a shoe mounted on one section, a head mounted on the other section, a securing device for holding the sections against relative movement and in dierent relative positions, said device including an outstanding actuating element arranged upon the under side of the head, and a bowed spring located Within the head and having an end engaging the outstanding actuating element, said spring being disposed in angular relation to the securing device and extending contiguous to one edge of the head.
12. In a button, the combination with a shoe having a tubular shank-section provided with internal teeth, of another shank-section slidably mounted in the tubular section and having outstanding journals, securing devices mounted on the inner shank-section and having outstanding actuating-stems passing through the journals, a head pivoted upon the journals, a bowed spring mounted within the head and having its ends associated with the securing devices, and a spring attached at one end to the bowed spring and having an intermediate portion bearing against the outer end of the inner shank-section.
