ABDOEVHNAL SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 747,139, dated December 15, 1903. Application led December 5, 1902. Serial No. 133,939. (N0 model-.l
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED W. CLARK, of Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Abdominal Supports; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and Iigures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specilication.
The object of my invention is to provide an abdominal support which is suitable and effective for its purpose and can be Worn with little or no inconvenience and discomfort.
In the drawings, Figure l shows a perspective View of a support of my improved construction. Fig. 2 shows a front view of the front portion with the band extended in a fiat plane. back portion in a similar manner. Fig. 4 shows a section of the front portion, taken on line A B of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 shows a section of the rear portion, taken on line C I) of Fig. 3.
Referring to t-he reference letters and ligures in a more particular description, l indi# cates the front portion of the band, which is made to conform to the gure of the wearer and is comparatively wide vertically. The rear portion 2 of the band is narrower and adjustably connected with the forward portion by elastic straps 3, with buckles 4c provided upon one or both sides of the band. The front part l ofthe band is of non-elastic material-such as canvas, for instance-and has secured thereto or .inlaid between the walls or ply the horizontally-extending flexible bands or ribs (L a, dac. These ribs a a, are of Whalebone or similar material and normally tend to extend in a straight line. The rear or back part 2 is also constructed of in- Fig. 3 shows a rear View of the` elastic material similar to the front portion and is provided with vertically-extending flexible stays or ribs b b, similar to a a. y In connection With the band there is employed a pair of leg-bands 5 5, preferably opening at the outer sides and provided with an elastic strap 6 and buckle 7. The leg-bands are connected with'the front portion l ofthe main body-band by a short elastic strap 8 and a buckle 9 and are connected at the rear with the back portion 2 of the main bodyband by a comparatively long elastic strap lO, whereby the leg-bands are allowed to assume an angular positonwith reference to the inain body-band.
The longitudinal ribs a in the front portion of the body-band tend to exert a pressure on the abdomen, while permitting a com'- paratively free bend of the body. The vertical ribs Z9 in the back bandserve to hold the band portion 2 extended vertically and obviates a tendency to draw together into a narrow insufficiently-wide band. Through the medium of the straps 3 theseribs also tend to keep the front portion properly eX- tended vertically.
WhatA I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is l In an abdominal support, a front band portion conforming to the figure, and a back portion connected by elastic straps at the sides with the front portion, leg-encircling straps connected at the front by a short elastic strap to the said front portion and connected at the rear by elongated elastic straps with the said back portion, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have affixed my signature, in presence of two witnesses, lthis 28th day of November, 1902.
FRED W. CLARK.
