To' all whom, t may concern,.-
Beit known that I, BONA ALLEN, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Buford, in the county of G'uinnett and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Plow, ofwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plows of that class which are provided with detachable points, and it may be described as an improvement upon the device for which Letters Patent of the United States No. 718,041 were granted to Willbanks and Allen on the 6th day of January, 1903.
By my present invention I aim to simplify the construction and to provide a device which shall be simple, durable, and easily manipulated. With these ends in View my invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts,
which will be hereinafter' fully described, and
particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective View of a plow constructed in accordance with the principles of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the stock or standard to which the moldboard and point have been attached. Fig. 3 is a perspective View showing the parts of my invention disassembled.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are indicated by similar numerals of reference.
1 designates the plow-standard, which is of the ordinary bifurcated pattern, usually formed by bending to an approximately U shape a strap of iron of suitable dimensions, the upper ends of the side members of said standard-being bent in a forward direction and connected adj ustably with the plow-beam 2 in the usual well-known manner. I prefer to strengthen or reinforce the point of the standard by means of a lug 3, welded between the sides.
4designates a plow-point which hasacountersunk opening 5 to receive a headed bolt 6, which is provided with a transverse opening or slot 7'.
8 designates a lever which is pivotally mounted between the members of the bifurcated standard and which is provided at its lower end with a tooth or projection 9, bev- Serial No. 152.073. (No model eledupon its upper side, so that it will readily engage the slot 7 in the bolt 6.
The opening` 5 and the bolt 6 are made noncircular in order that the slot 7 may always be presented in the desired direction without danger of the bolt turning out of alinement.
10 designates the moldboard, the lower edge of which is adapted to fit snugly against the upper edge of the point 4. i The moldboard has a perforation ll, through which passes a bolt l2, adapted to extend through slots 14 in the lever 8, which latter may thus be tightened, so as to bear downwardly upon the bolt G, thereby causing the latter t0 retain the point 4 in position with absolute security. An additional perforation 15 in the moldboard, near the upper edge ofthe latter, admits of the passage of an ordinary tie-bolt 16, which engages a perforation 17 in an L-shaped keeper 18, one arm of which extends between the members of the standard and is adapted to bear against the upper edge of the moldboard, which is thereby retained securely against displacement in an upward direction.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages 0f my invention will be readily understood. When it is desired to remove the plow-point for the purpose of sharpening the same or for any other reason, this may be effected by simply removing the nut from the bolt 12, thus permitting the lever to be tilted, thereby disengaging its point from the slotted bolt; 6 and enabling the plow-point to be lifted off. This, it will be seen, may be edected without disturbing the position of the moldboard, and in like manner a plowpoint may be replaced. In case of necessity it is obvious that the tiebolt, by means of which the moldboard is retained in position, may be temporarily loosened, thus permitting the moldboardto be adjusted in such a position that its lower edge shall be absolutely nsh with the upper edge of the point. It will also be seen that the bolt 12, when connected with the lever 8, forms an additional means of attachment for the moldboard.
I desire it to be understood that while I have herein described a simple and preferred form of my improved device I do not limit IOO myself to the structural details herein set forth, but reserve to myself the right to any changes and modifications within the scope of my invention and which may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacricing the utility of the same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- Y l. In a device of the class described, the combination of a slotted plow-standard, a lever mounted pivotally between the sides of the same, a point having a countersunk perforation a bolt engagingsaid perforation and having a transverse slot, a moldboard mounted upon the standard and having a perforation, and a bolt extending through said perforation and engaging the upper end of the lever.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a slotted plow-standard, a pointv having a countersunk perforation, a bolt having a transverse slot, a lever pivoted between the side members of the standard and having at its lower end a tooth engaging the transverse perforation of said bolt and at its upper end a slot, a moldboard resting upon the standard with its lower edge in contact with the upper edge of the plow-point, and a bolt connecting said moldboard with the slotted end of the lever.
8. In a device of the class described, the combination of a slotted plow-standard, a lever pivoted between the side members of said standard, a detachable point having a conntersunk perforation, a bolt engaging said perforation and having a transverse slot adapted to be engaged by the point of the aforementioned lever, a moldboard supported upon the standard, means for connecting the moldboard with said standard, and auxiliary connecting means consisting of a bolt connecting said moldboard with the upper end of the lever.
