INDEX.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Lett-.ers Patent No. 746,847, dated December 15, 1903- Applieetion filed September 27, 1901. Serial No. 76,734. (Nomodeld To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS KLOPSOH, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in indexes to be used in connection with books, and particularly with devotional books, such as testaments, Bibles, prayer-books, die.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of my invention and of its mode or mannerof operation, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure l illustrates one form of separate index containing my invention disposed on one side of a book-mark or ribbon and consisting of the names of the books of the Bible andthe pages on whichv such books commence. Fig. 2 is one side, and Fig. 3 the other side, of another' example of my invention, the one containing an index of the books of the Old Testament and the other an index of the books of the New Testament With the paging. Fig. 4 shows my invention adapted to the Book of Common Prayer.
Similar letters of reference indicate vlike parts in all the drawings'.
In carrying out my invention a selection is made of those particular parts of the contents of the book to which it is applied which are likely to be most frequently sought for in services, lectures, Bible classes, dan., the object being not so much to prepare an exhaustivetable of the contents of the book under consideration as it is to indicate approximately certain parts of the contents in order that these may be found at al glance, and it is furthermore embodied in an independent book-mark or part of suchl book-mark or similar device and so that from such approximate reference the particular part sought may be very readily and conveniently found without the trouble and delay incident to first turning over the leaves of the book to nd a page table of contents in those instances Where there is such a table forming a part of such books.
In Fig. l is shown such au index according to my invention printed directly upon a suitable ribbon or book-mark A, consisting ot silk or other material. `In this instance the names of the books of the Bible are arranged inralphabetical order and are all printed on one side of such book-mark, so that when a particular book is to be found the page on which that book commences can be seen at a glance by looking at the book-mark, which is made of such length as to project at the top and bottom of the book with which it is designed to be used.
In Fig. 2 is shown an arrangement of the books of the 01d Testament on one side of a slip B, of suitable material, and in Fig. 3 is shown the reverse side of the same slip B, on which the books of the New Testament are similarly arranged. In this iustanceof my invention I show the index on a part B, which maybe a celluloid slip or similar substance, With suitable ribbons b h attached to each end through slits e c, these ribbons being long enough to project from each end of the book With which the same is intended to be used; but it will be understood that the index may be printed on both sides of any suitable ribbon, silk, doc., if desired.
In Fig. 4: is shown an example of the invention arranged to be used in connection With a Book of Common Prayer. U is such a book, provided With a book-mark or ribbon d, and this ribbon is drawn through the index-card D through slots ff, and this index may be drawn down so as to project beyond the ends of the book, as indicated in Fig. 4, or it may be moved up toward the middle of the book-mark d and lie Within the book C, as desired.
The index shown in Fig. l may also be printed upon a slip of tough paper, parchment, celluloid, dec., and slits cut in the same through Which a suitable ribbon may be drawn, as in the instance shown in Fig. s, to constitute part of the book-mark, if desired, and the same course may be pursued in regard to any such index printed on one and thus secured, as also indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, in order that it may not cover any part of the printed matter.
It will be seen that the invention com prises an independent or supplementary index which may be adapted to be conveniently used with any books, especially such as are employed in services, lectures, Bible classes, and other occasions when it is desirable to find quickly certain portions of the contents without the delay incident to searching for the table of contents or other reference portions which may happen to be incorporated in some part of the book itself.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A book-index formed of a single strip of iexible material and having printed on its plane surfaces references to certain parts of the book with the initial page-numbers of those parts and means for securing said strip to a book-mark substantially as described.
2. A device of the character described comprising a strip ot' celluloid having slots at each end and provided with printed references to certain parts of a book with the initial page-number printed thereon as and for the purpose described.
3. As a new article of manufacture an index comprising'a flat piece of iexible material having printed von its plane surfaces references to certain parts of a book with the number of the initial page and a ribbon connected at each end substantially as shown 35 and described.
