Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 25, 1917.
Application filed June 13, 1916. Serial No. 103,414.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY H. Honmnon, citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folders, of whichthe following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in folders such as are used in filing letters and other matter, in the vertical filing system.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a folder in which the filed ma ter is permanently held in a fixed position, the various documents being held in consecutive order, thereby rendering each letter readily accessible in its proper chronological order.
Another object of my invention is to so construct the folder that it is no more bulky than the ordinary folder, that the increased cost of manufacture is very slight and it enables the matter to be filed without extra With these and other objects in view, the
invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts here in illustrated and more specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a view in plan of the folder opened out showing the improved construc-- tion which forms a feature of my invention and showing the manner in which the documents are held therein.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view in perspective of the portion of the folder adjacent to the center.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged view in section through the folder in its folded position containing a number of documents showing the manner in which the folder acts as a binder for the documents.
Referring to corresponding parts of the several views by the same numerals of reference, the folder consists of a sheet having the two leaves 1 and 2 folded along the line 3,
and in addition the folder is creased along the line 4: forsthe purpose hereinafter described. Page 1 is provided with a plurality of elongated rectangular tabs 5 which are severed on three sides but connected along the side adjacent the line 3. Between each of these tabs is a stigip 6 connecting the two pages. and the entire inner surface of the tabs and strips isf'provided with an adhesive compoundas indicated by the shading 7 The tabs are cut in this manner when. it is desired to file the documents so that they turn in the manner of the ordinary book page. However, if it is desirable to file the documents so that they turn along the top portion of the folder then the leaves are provided with tabs 8 along the top portion of the page, these tabs being provided with an adhesive as shown at 10. In filing material in this folder two of the tabs are displaced from the openin in which they are normally held, the ocument is laced on the side of the folder 2, the adhesive surface of the tabs is wetted and the tabs pressed on the face of the document as shown at 9. Thus the letter or other matter is held in a fixed position within the folder at two points and it maybe turned in the manner of the ordinary book page in order to have access to the pages below it. When the tabs along the top of the page are used the matter is placed in position in similar manner, but when filed in this manner the letters are lifted vertically upward along the top surface as an axis. The crimp 4 serves to cause the page 1 to fold over the documents as shown in Fig. 3.
I claim as new and wish to cover by Letters Patent A file folder comprising a sheet forming two leaves, a plurality of tabs cut from said leaves adjacent the top edges and having one end unsevered.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
HARRY H. HOLLIDGE.
