Specification of Letters Patent.
NOVELTY ENTERTAINMENT DEVICE.
Patented June 9, 1914.
Application filed March 4, 1914. Serial No. 822,366.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR J. MEALAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Novelty Entertainment Device, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements 1n devices adapted to afford entertainment, and more particularly to a device in which the elements of uncertainty and humor are so involved as to produce an interesting d1version, especially adapted for the entertainment of social gatherings.
The objects of the invention are, to produce a novel entertainment device in the use of which a number of individuals may separately take part for the entertainment of the entire gathering, the individual taking such part being uninformed of the full effect and meaning of his acts until after the same are completed, and such acts necessarily resulting in unusual or comic expressions well suited to the entertainment of those present. These objects, together with other objects readily apparent to those skilled in the art, may be attained by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, although the invention may be embodied in other forms, the construction illustrated being chosen by way of example.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a-perspective View of a book embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a portion of one of the pages of said book.
Throughout the several views similar ref erence numerals indicate similar parts.
More specifically describing the constructiondisclosed in said drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the front cover and the numeral 2 the back cover of a book provided with a plurality of leaves arranged in pairs, each pair comprising a first, apertured leaf 3 and a second, unapertured leaf 4, said leaves being provided with uncut edges at 5.
The second leaf of each pair is provided, upon the front page thereof, with an incomplete novel or humorous sketch, said sketch being incomplete by reason of omitted portions where are arranged blank spaces. In the first leaf of the pair are arranged apertures which register with the blank spaces in said sketch in such way that as the pair of leaves is viewed before the edge at 5 is cut none of the said sketch appearing on the second leaf is visible. This con dition is illustrated in Fig. 1, in which the blank spaces 6 on the second leaf are visi-. ble through the apertures 7 of the first leaf.
Appearing on the front page of the first leaf are brief directions adapted to guide the individual in filling the various spaces in such way as to serve to complete the sketch on the second leaf in accordance with the context of the sketch. In this connection it should be noted that certain suggestions or incomplete words or figures may, if desired, appear in the spaces 6, as for instance, the initial letters M. A. appearing in the space disclosed by that aperture below the direction A favorite actress or the small picture of a dagger in the space reserved for the picture of the individual, as shown at the lower left-hand corner of the page.
Various general plans for the preparation of such a book may be carried out, various pairs of leaves being especially adapted for particularly designated individuals. The pair of leaves illustrated in the drawing is especially adapted to be used by a young lady, the text of the sketch being especially adapted accordingly.
In using the book, such as described, the spaces 6 should be filled in with pen or pencil in accordance with the directions accompanying the apertures and when all of the spaces have been filled in the edge at 5 may be cut, permitting the disclosure of the completed sketch on the second leaf. It should, of course, be understood that no attempt should be made to read the incompleted. sketch before filling in the spaces, for by so doing the element of uncertainty and consequent humorous results would be avoided.
In the entertainment of a social gathering it will be understood that any desired num ber of the pairs of leaves may be used or filled in by various individuals before cutting the edges of any of the pairs. \Vhen all of said individuals have filled in the spaces of the various sketches, the leaves may be cut and the various sketches read to the assemblage, producing a harmless and jolly form of entertainment for all concerned.
Although the drawings and above specification disclose the best mode in which I have contemplated embodying my invention, I desire to be not limited to the details of such disclosure, for many changes in form and construction may be made, as cirbe filled in through said aperture.
2.. An entertainment device comprising first and second members, the second member provided with a work rendered incomplete by blank spaces, the first member detachably connected to said second member, and provided with apertures corresponding to said blank spaces, directions for filling said spaces disclosed upon said first memher, and said apertures adapted to permit the filling of said spaces without the disclosure of the said work when said members areconnected together. a I
3 a device of the character mentioned, a pair of leaves uncut at the edge and constituting first and second connected leaves, the second leaf provided with a liter ary or artistic sketch provided with blank spaces rendering said sketch incomplete, the first leaf provided with apertures adapted to register with said spaces and adapted to permit the filling of said spaces, without the disclosure of the incomplete sketch, and said leaves adapted to be separated from each other by cutting said uncut edge, after said spaces haveybeen filled, whereby to disclose the completed sketch upon said second leaifi,
4c, a device of the character described,-
a pair of leaves detachably connected to each other'and constituting first and second connected leaves, the second leaf provided with v a sketch provided with blank spaces rendering said sketch incomplete, the first leaf provided with apertures adapted to register with said spaces and adapted to permit the filling of said spaces without the disclosure of the incomplete sketch, directions for guidance inEfillingsaid spaces appearing on said. first leaf and said leaves adapted to be separated fromeach other, after said spaces have been filled, whereby to disclose the completed sketch upon said second leaf;
5. In a device of the character described,
a first, apertured member and a second, .u'n-
apertured member detachably connected to c said first member, said second member provided with a work adapted tobe concealed by said first member whensaid members are connected together, and further provided with a space registering with'the aperture in said first member when said members are connected together, afragment appearing in said space and adapted to. be utilized as a portion of work filled into said space, directions appearingon said first member for guidance in filling said space-in accordance wit-l1 the vundisclosed work on said second 7 member, and said members adapted to .be detached'after said space-has been filled,
whereby to disclose the completed work a upon said second member. i
