PATENT FFICE.
SKIRT-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 745,354, dated December 1, 1 903.
Application led May 13, 1903. Serial No. 156.986. (No model.)
To aZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMIRA JENNINGS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of SaltLake and State ofUtah, haveinventedanew and useful Skirt- Supporter, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to garment-supporters of that class which are usually employed for the purpose of connecting the skirt with the waist at the back of the same in such a manner as to preventY sagging.
My invention has for its object to provide a device of this class which shall be simple in construction, which shall serve effectually to hold together the parts which are to bev united thereby, by theuse of which the skirt may be readily unhooked when desired without detaching the connecting device, and which shall be so constructed that the said connecting device may be very easily and quickly transferred from one waist to another.
With these and other ends in View my invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown a simple and preferred form of embodiment of my invention; but` it will be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise structural details therein shown, but reserve the right to any such changes and modifications, especially as to size, proportion, or eXact manner of assemblage, as may be resorted to with in the scope of my invention and without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the utility of the same. I
In said drawings, Figure l is a rear elevation of the invention, showing the same applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-sectional view through the su pporter, skirt-band, and a portion of the waist. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the supporter. Fig. 4 is a perspective detail view of one of the eyes used in connection with my invention to engage the hooks upon the supporting members.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are indicated by similar numerals. Yof reference.
1 designates algarment-supporting plate, upon the rear side of which are hooks 2 2 and 3, the former being disposed comparatively near the side edges of said plate, while the latter is disposed intermediately between said two hooks and at a lower level than the latter.
Hingedly connectedwith the upper edge of the plate l is a flange-plate 6, provided with a plurality of downwardly-extending pins 7, adapted to engage the shirt-waist near-the lower edge of the same, said pins serving to connect the supporting device with the waist, a plurality of said pins being used for the purpose of distributing the strain, and thus preventing the material of the waist from becoming torn.
Hingedly connected with the lower edge of the plate 1 is a shield 6a, said shield being connected with the plate 1 by means of a piutle 9. spring 8, the projecting arms of which brace, respectively, against the plate l and the shield 6a, the tendency of such pressure being to hold said members closely together.
Eyes 4, which are preferably U-shaped, as shown in Fig. 4., are provided, said eyes being attached to the band of the skirt 5 in suitable position to engagethe hooks 2 2 and 3.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with theaccompanying drawings, the operation and advantages of my improved garment-supporting device will be readily understood. Thesupportingdeviceisplaced in engagement with the waist b v inserting the pins 7 through the material of the latter at the back thereof, the spring-actuated shield being meanwhile held open in the position approximately shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. After the insertion of the pins the shield oa is released and caused by the spring 8 to swing into the position shown in Fig. 2, where itis readily held, not only by the action of the spring, but also owing to the position it occupies against the body of the wearer. The points of the pins are thus protected and the material of the waist will be subjected to a comparatively trifling amount of strain at any one place thereof. The device having been adjusted as described, the skirt may be connected therewithby simply engaging the eyes et with the hooks2 2 and 3, whereby it will be held with entire security against displacement.
Suitably coiled upon said pintle is a The device may and will preferably be covered when in use by meansof a belt, as shown in Fig. l, where a portion ot said belt has been broken away to illustrate the construction of my device.
The arrangement of the attaching-hooks 2 2 and 3 in an irregular row or at different levels renders the disengagement from said hooks of the eyes 4c less liable to occur, as I have found by practical experience. The general construction of the device is simple, eective, andinexpensive. The deviceis conveniently interchangeable from one waist to another. It will be found to be durable and practically efficient. y
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a device of the class described, a main plate, hooks upon the rear side of said main plate, a Harige-plate hingedly connected with the upper edge of said main plate, and a plurality of pins extending downwardly from the outer edge of said flange-plate.
2. In a device of the class described, a main plate, a plurality of hooks on the rear side of the same, a Harige-plate hingedly connected with the upper edge of said main plate, apin- 4:. In a device of the class described, a sup-A porting-plate having a vplurality of hooks thereon, attaching means hingedly connected with the upper edge of said supporting-plate, and a spring-actuated shield connected with the lower edge of the supporting-plate and adapted to overlap the points of the attaching means.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aiiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ELMIRA JENNINGS.
