Be it known that L-JAMES B. CAROLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose-Supporters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same.

My invention relates to certain improvements in hose-supporters, butV more particularly refers to devices of this class which comprise a metallic hook device capable of being attached to the corset-fastening and stocking-engaging members depending from said hook.

The object of my invention is to provide a device of this description which when in position for use cannot accidentally become detached from the corset when the fastenings thereof have been unclasped, but which can readily be attached and detached by a very simple manipulation.

IVith this end in view my invention consists in certain details of construction, such as will be hereinafter fully set forth and then specifically be designated by the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application, Figure 1 is a front elevation showing my improvement attached to a corset in position for use; Fig. 2, a rear view of my improvement as it appears when attached, the stud of the corset-fastening appear-ing in section; Fig. 3, a rear view of my improvement, showing the parts in condition for detaching from the stud; and Fig. 4, a broken sectional elevation illustrating the manner in which my improvement is attached to or detached from the stud of a corset-clasp.

Similar numbers of reference denote like parts in the several figures of the drawings.

My improvement comprises an upper portion 1 and a lower portion 2, the upper portion being provided with small ears 3, which are curled around the lower portion, whereby the two'portions are hinged together. The upper portion is provided with a verticallydisposed pear-shaped slot 4, the large end of said slot being at the bottom, while the lower portion has an extension 5, which normally projects upwardly beyond the large end of the slot 4. The stock of the upper portion 1 at its lower side where the large end of the slot 4 is located is raised, so as to present an outwardly-bulging appearance, as shown at 6, so that when my improvement is in position for use, as shown at Fig. l, the vertical plane of this enlarged portion of the slot willbe outside the vertical plane of the upper portion of the slot.

The stockingengaging members have nothing to do with my present invention; but I have illustrated in the drawings a preferred and popular construction of these members, in which a flexible pad 7 is connected in any suitable manner directly to the bottom of the lower portion 2, while the stocking-engaging members S 9 (which are broken away) are shown depending directly from the bottom of this pad.

The operation of my improvement is as follows: Presupposing the parts to be in the position shown at Fig. 1, if the corset be unclasped, so as to leavev my improvement suspended upon the stud 10 of the corset-clasp, it will be impossible to remove my device until the extension 5 is in some manner withdrawn, so that the head of the clasp-stud may pass through the lower enlarged end of the slot 4. Therefore the only way in which this extension 5 can be withdrawn is to swing the lower portion 2 so as to carry this extension downwardly into the position shown at Fig. 3. It will be readily understood that this swinging movement of the lower portion would not be likely to be effected accidentally; but I have provided for such a contingency by forming the bulge 6, the function of which I will now explain. When the portions l 2 are in the position shown at Fig. 3', the extension 5 will be at an angle to the plane of the portion 1, as shown at Fig. 4, and therefore this extension will strike against the face of the corset-husk 1l, so that When the portion 1 is moved upwardly the head of the stud 10 will wedge against this bulge and cannot pass into the enlarged portion of the slot. When this bulge is provided, the only way in which my improvement can be attached to or detached from the stud is by holding my device sidewise with the parts in position as shown at Fig. 3, so that the extension 5 will not bear against the corset-husk, but will strike against IOO a soft portion of the corset inside the vertical plane of the outer surface of said bnsk, and the device can then readily be connected With or disconnected from the stud. After my improvement has been connected with the stud ofthe corset-clasp it is swung around into proper position, as shown at Fig. 1.

It will be quite clear that the mere weight of the stocking-engaging members will be suficient to hold the extension 5 in its locking position, and therefore it is not absolutely necessary that the bulge 6 be provided, and I do not wish to be limited thereby, since this provision is merely precautionary and perhaps fanciful and is not necessary to the successful operation of my improvement.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. A hose-supporter device capable of being attached to the stud of a corset-clasp, the same comprising an upper portion and a lower portion hinged together, the upper portion having therein a pear-shaped verticallydisposed slot having an enlarged end at the bottom, while the lower portion is provided with an extension which normally projects beyond said enlarged end, substantially as set forth.

2. In a hose-supporter device capable of attachment to the stud of a corset-clasp, the combination of an upper portion having therein a vertically-disposed pear-shaped slot with the enlarged end vat the bottom thereof, a lower portion hinged to the upper portion and having an extension which normally projects upwardly in substantial parallelism with the upper portion and beyond the enlarged end of said slot, and the stocking-engaging members suspended from said lower portion, substantially as set forth.

3. In a hose-supporter device capable of at tachment to the stud of a corset-clasp, the combination of the upper portion having therein a vertically-disposed pear-shaped slot with the enlarged end at the bottom thereof, the stock of said portion containing said enlarged end being bulged outwardly, the lower portion hinged to the upper portion and provided with an extension which normally projects upwardly beyond said enlarged end of the slot, and the stocking-engaging members suspended from said lower portion, substantially as set forth.
