SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 734,263, dated July 21, 1903.
Application filed October 16 1902. Serial No. 127,448. llo model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN K. HICKOK, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Garment- Supporters; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the numerals of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a front view of the lower portion of a corset with my improved garment-supporter connected therewith; Fig. 2, a front or plan view of the garment-supporter plates, showing them in full lines in position preparatory to engagement and in broken lines as engaged; Fig. 3, aplan view of one of the plates detached; Fig. 4, an under side view of the second plate; Fig. 5, an edge view of the same; Fig. 6, a plan view of a modified form of strap-supporting plates; Fig. '7, a sectional view thereof on the line a b of Fig. 6; Fig. 8, a plan view of another modified form which my invention may assume; Fig. 9, a sectional view thereof on the line 0 d of Fig. 8; Fig. 10, a plan View of two plates provided with ball-and-socket fasteners; Fig. 11, a sectional view on the line e f of Fig. 10.
This invention relates to an improvement in garment-supporters, and particularly to hose-supporters for ladies, and in which the supporter is adapted to be secured to one of the stud members of an ordinary corset-clasp, the object of the invention being a simple device adapted to be readily connected with the,
stud member of a corset-clasp and so as to be interlocked therewith, and at the same time so interlock the corset-clasp that its members cannot be separated until the garment-supporter is removed therefrom; and the invention consists in the construction as will be hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention I employ two members, to each of which a hose-supporter strap is connected and provide means for interlocking the members with each other and with the stud member of a corset-clasp.
As shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 of the drawings, I employ a plate 2,- formed with a centrally-arranged opening 3, with a vertical slot4 extending upward therefrom. One edge 5 of the plate forms a segment of a circle, of which the center of the opening 3 is the center. At one side near the top is a shoulder 6, and for uniformity of appearance a similar shoulder 7 is formed at the opposite side. At one side of the lower edge is a projection 8, in which a slot 9 is formed for the attachment to the plate of one of the straps 10 of the hosesupporter. The other member consists of a plate 11, formed with a segmental shoulder 12, corresponding to the curvature of the edge 5 of the plate, At its outer end the plate 11 is formed with a slot 13 for the attachment thereto of a hose-supporter strap 14. This plate is also provided with an inwardlyextending lip 15, and at its inner end is a button 16, adapted to enter the hole 3 when one edge of the plate is against the shoulder 6, as indicated in Fig. 2. This plate 11 is adapted to set over the plate 2, and when the button 16 enters the hole 3 the plate is turned downward until its lower end abuts against the extension 8, as shown in Fig. 1, at which time the button rides over the under surface of the plate 2 and stands in line with the slot 4, as indicated in broken lines in Fig. 2. The plate 2 sets over the stud 17 of the corsetclasp after the eye member 18 is engaged therewith, and the plate is drawn down, so that the stud 17 stands in the slot 4. When this member is thus in position, the plate 11 is applied as above indicated, and the button closes the lower end of the slot 4, so as to not only interlock the members together, but to lock the members of the Corset-clasp.
For the purpose of interlocking the plates 2 and 11 the plate 2 may be'provided with a slight projection 19 and the plate 11 with a corresponding groove 20, terminating in a depression 21, to receive the projection 19; but this means for interlocking the members is not always necessary, as the strain of the straps upon the plates normally tends to draw them together.
Instead ofturning the second member of the holder the plate 22, as shown in Fig. 7 may be formed with a slot 23, with which a hook 24 on the rear of the member 25 may engage, the plate 22 corresponding to the plate 2 before described and the plate 25 to the plate 11, and both members are provided with slots for attachment thereto of the supporterstraps. Vith this construction I employ a lever 20, with which a button 27 is connected and so as to be turned thereby, the button being adapted to enter and turn in the opening 28 forthe purpose of locking the members together and to the corset-clasp. As herein shown, the lever is provided with stop-shoulders 29 30, adapted to engage at the limit of its movement with a stud 31, mounted on the member 25.
Instead of hooking the member to the plate 22 it may be formed as shown in Fig. 8, in which the plate 32 is formed with a lip 33, engaging with one edge of the plate 34, the means for interlocking the plates being the same as shown in Figs. 6 and '7, or instead of providing a lever and button the outer end of the member maybe provided with a ball or stud member 36, adapted to enter and engage with a round opening 37, formed in the plate 38, this stud member coacting with the central opening in the same manner as the well-known ball-and-socket fasteners, and this ball or stud member closing the central opening in the plate not only interlocks the members, but interlocks the members of the corset-clasp in the same Way as before described.
It will be apparent that in carrying out my invention various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from my invention, and I therefore do not wish to be understood as limiting my invention to the exact construction shown, but hold myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations therein as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A garment supporter comprising two members, each having a hose-supporter strap connected with it, one member adapted for engagement to a corset at a single point, and a second member interlocked with and supported by the first member, substantially as described.
2. In a hose supporter, the combination with a plate having an opening adapting the plate to be set over the stud member of the corsetclasp, and having a hose-supporter strap connected thereto, of a second plate also having a hose-supporter strap connected with it and provided with a button coacting with the opening in the first plate to close the same and interlock the plate with the corset-clasp, substantially as described.
3. A garment supporter comprising two members, each adapted to have a hose-supporter strap connected with it, one member formed with a central opening and a slot extending upward therefrom, the other member formed with a button adapted to enter said opening and be turned therein to close one end of said slot, substantially as described.
I. A garment supporter comprising two members each adapted to have a hose-supporter strap connected with it, one member formed with a centrally-arranged opening and a slot extending upward therefrom, a segmental edge and a shoulder at the upper end thereof, the other member provided with a lip to engage with the under surface of the first plate, and with a button adapted to enter the opening in the first plate, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANKLIN K. IIICKOK.
