GARTER-SLIDE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,691, dated February 3, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, DON S. THOMPSON, of West Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Garter-Slides; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same,

This invention relates to an improvement in slides for garters, specially adapted to gentlernens garters, the object being to construct the slide so thatthe strap may beturned downward in a vertical line and the slide serve also as a means for securing the free end of the downward extension after ithas passed through the loop of the clasp, and also as a means for engaging the hook on the strap 2 around the leg; and the invention consists in the construction of the slide, as more fully hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claim.

The slide, as seen in Fig. 4, is made from 0 fiat sheet metal. It is constructed with two horizontal slots, a b, each in width correspond ing to the width of the garter-strap, and is also constructed with a slot, d, at right angles to the slots ab and in a position outside of one 5 end of said slots. site end of the horizontal slots at an angle of about forty-five degrees. Through the plate, outside this diagonal slot, is an eye, f. This 40 completes the construction.

The garter-strap A is introduced from the back side of the plate through the vertical slot 01, thence returned through the diagonal slot e,

which gives a turn to the strap thus passed through the diagonal slot at right angles to the main part of the strapthat is, substantially parallel with theslot d-B, Fig. 2, representing this downward run of the strap. The strap is then passed through the loop 0 of the clasp, returned upward in rear of the plate, thence outward through the slot 1), thence returned through the slot at. This interlacing oi the free end of the strap secures the said free end, thereby holding the clasp in its proper rela- 5 5 tion to the slide. The other end, D, of the strap is provided with a hook, E, which, passed around the leg, is engaged with the eye f, as seen in Fig. 1. By this construction the downwardly projecting portion of the strap may be readily adjusted through the slots to b to give the required length, and the downward extension of the strap is held in its proper relation to the strap around the leg.

I claim The herein-described slide, consisting of a plate constructed with two horizontal parallel slots, at b, the slot d at right angles to said horizontal slots, the diagonal slot 6, and with the eye f, substantially as described.
