SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 745,306, dated November 24, 1903.

T at whom it may concern.
Be it known that we, JAMES E. WRIGHT and LEWIS J. EDWARDS, citizens of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Package-Fasteners; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention is an improved package-fasteneradapted for use in tying papersand other articles in packages; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices hereinafter fully described and claimed.
The object of our invention is to provide an improved device of this character which is exceedingly light, cheap,and simple and is eflicient for tying packages of papers and the like so that the same are securely fastened and may be readily unfastened when desired.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of our improved package-fastener, showing the same applied to a package of papers. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line a a of Fig. 1.
In the embodiment of our invention we provide a plate 1, which is preferably made of thin sheet-steel, iron, or other suitable metal, of suitable size, and is provided on one side with a notch 2, whereby an arm 3 is formed between said notch and the end 4 of the said plate. The end 4: is provided with an opening 5, (one or more,) by means of which one end of a cord a may be attached to the said plate, and the end 6 of the said plate opposite the end 4 is preferably provided with an opening 7 to reduce the weight of the plate and facilitate the manipulation thereof by the thumb or finger of the operator, said opening enabling the thumb or finger of the operator to be placed therein and a grip to be thus secured on the plate. The outer end of the laterally-extending arm 3 is upturned, as at 8, to enable a cord to be readily passed under it when-the plate is bearing on a package of letters, papers, or the like. On the said arm 3 is a stud 9, adapted to be slidably engaged by the cord, and to the said stud is attached a tension spring-plate 10, which bears on the arm 3 and is adapted to firmly clamp the cord on the said arm. The length of the cord is is then gripped between the tension springplate and the arm 3 to fasten the free end of the cord, as shown. The tension spring-plate is provided at the side which is next the notch 2 with an outwardly-inclined and laterallyprojecting stud or arm 11 to facilitate the insertion of the cord between said tension-plate and the plate 1 by guiding the cord between them. The package may be readily unfastened by first disengaging the free end of-the cord from between the plate and the spring tension-plate, as will be understood.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of our invention will be readily apparent, it
is thought, without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of our invention.
'Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim is- A package-fastener, comprising a plate having a notch in and a projecting arm at one side, said projecting arm being intermediate the ends of the plate, the latter having means whereby one end of a cord may be attached thereto, and means on said arm to detachably secure the free end of the cord to the plate, substantially as described.
