UNITED STATES BLUFORD PRESTON GREENWOOD, OF EL PASO, TEXAS.
LETTER-TYING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BLUronn PRESTON Gnunmvoon, a citizen of the United States, residing at El Paso, in the county of El Paso and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Letter-Tying Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to package ties and particularly to devices of that general class employed for the tying of bundles of letters for transmission through the mail, or for the convenience of the carrier.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a device of this class that is of very simple and inexpensive construction, and which may be readily applied to a bundle of letters and will accommodate bundles or packages of various sizes.
With this and other objects in view, as will more fully hereinafter appear, the in vention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportions, size and minor details of the structure may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings :--Figure 1 is a perspective view of a package tie constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of one of the strap guiding clips, detached.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
In carrying out the invention, a single strap 10 is employed, and this strap is laced through guiding openings formed in a pair of clips 11 and 12, in such manner that the two ends of the strap may be brought together and fastened. The upper clip 11 is provided with a plurality of segmental openings 13 through which the strap 10 is threaded as shown in Fig. 1 for the purpose of guiding the strap around the sides and ends of the package. The lower clip 12 is provided with pairs of parallel slots 14, one pair being arranged at a right angle to the other, and that portion of the strap which is Specification of Letters Patent.

outer face of the clip, as distinguished from the right angle course in which the strap is guided by the uppermost clip 11.
One end of the strap is provided with a fixed loop 17 through which the opposite end of the strap is threaded, and on this free end of the strap is mounted a clamping block 18, that is provided with a screw 19 which in turn will bite against the face of the strap and serve to firmly hold the same in position. The free end of the strap is double, as indicated at 20, for the purpose of increasing its thickness to such an extent as to prevent accidental displacing of the clamp 18.
In using the device the strap is threaded through the openings and slots of the two clips, and in this way will be held in such position as to permit the ready insertion of a bundle of letters. The packages, of course, vary considerably in size, but the strap may be readily drawn through the clips in either direction to accommodate a large or a small bundle of letters. After the strap has been drawn tightly around the bundle, the guard or clamp 18 is slipped up tightly against the eye or loop 17 and then the screw 19 is turned in order to hold the clamp firmly in place.
WVhat is claimed is In a package tie of the class described, a clip provided with two pairs of parallel slots, one pair being disposed at a right angle to the other, a second clip provided with segmental openings, a single strap having an eye or loop at one end, said strap being threaded through one pair of slots in the first clip, and thence through a pair of adjacent segmental openings in the second clip, thence through the second pair of parallel slots of the first clip, thence through a second set of segmental openings of the second clip, and thence through the eye or loop at the end of the strap, and a clamping block carried by the free end of the strap and arranged to bind against said strap.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
