PACKAGE-TIE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 29, 1916.
Application filed July 26, 1915. Serial No. 42,026.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLEY \Vaioirr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sandusky, in the county of Sanilac and State of h'liehigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Package-Ties, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a mail holder, and more particularly to the class of package ties. V
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a tie of this character which is novel in construction to assure the secure fastening of the bundle or package of mail matter with despateh, and avoiding the necessity of the usual amount of string required for this purpose.
Another object of the invention is the novision of a tie of this character whici is readily and easily applied to and removed from a package. and when applied will hold the same together for the convenient handling of the same.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a tie of this character which is simple in construction, reliable and cilicient in use, strong, durable, and inexpensive in manufacture.
\Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the aecom mnying drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of mail matter constituting a bundle showing the tie constructed in accordance with the invention applied; Fig. 2 is an edge elevation; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A designates letters or other like mail matter constituting the bundle or package to which is applied the tie hereinafter fully described.
The tie comprises a plate 5, preferably made from metal, formed in one end with a substantially V-shaped recess 6 providing plate 5 a fork 7, while the opposite end has swingingly connected thereto a bail 8 serving as a handle so that the plate can be conveniently held firmly by an operator or user of the tie. \Vhile in the act of tying the bundle and also after the latter has been tied it can be readily carried in the hand of the operator or user by the handle.
Formed in the plate 5 are spaced holes 9 and 10, respectively, which are disposed at the longitudinal center thereof for a purpose presently described.
Adapted to be trained through the holes 9 and 10 is a cord 11 which is of the required length and is formed with a knot 12 at one end which secures the cord 11 to the and prevents it from being pulled through the hole 9 therein, while the other end is engaged in the fork 7 so that it may he pulled tight when carried about the bun dle or package for the tying of the same.
Mounted upon the outer face of the plate 5 between the holes 9 and 10 is a resilient clip finger 13 in which is passed the cord 11 after being guided through the fork 7 for the tightening of the same about the bundle or package. The cord 11 after being formed with a knot 12 at one end is passed downwardly through the hole 9, thence about the package upwardly through the bail 8, thence through the hole 10 and between the arms of the fork 7, and finally engaged in the clip finger 13 so that it will be securely held fast for the firm tying of the package.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and manner of use of the device will be clearly understood and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A package tie comprising a flat elongated plate formed with eyes in one end and a V-shaped bifurcation in the opposite end, said last named end serving as a fork, said plate being further provided with openings centrally thereof near opposite ends, a resilient clip secured to the plate between the openings, a cord knotted at one end and trained through one opening, and adapted to he passed about the package and through the other opening and fork for engagement in the clip to secure the cord taut about said puckngm and a hail loosely engaged in the eyes for swinging connection with one end of the plate.
