PACKAGE-TIE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 12, 1915.
Application filed March 22, 1915. Serial No. 16,207.
To all whom z'tQmag concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT L. LYNCH, a residing at Campbellsburg, in the county of Henry and State-of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Package-Ties; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates devices for facilitating ages or the like.
One object of the invention resides in providing a device which will enable mail matte-r, packages of letters or any other material to be quickly bound and securely fastened, as well as conveniently released when desired.
Another object of this invention is to prothrough the instrumenmay be used to improvements in the tying of packtality of which the same cord repeatedly.
Another and still further object of this invention resides in providing a device wherein the free end of the cord which has been passed around the package to be tied may be readily engaged without necessitating tying of said free end of the cord.
\Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in which corresponding parts are indicated by similar reference numerals: Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating my mproved tying appliance in operative position. Flg. 2 is a top plan view of the device, fragments of the cord being shown in adjusted position. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, fragments of the cord being shown in adjusted position. Fig. i is a transverse vertical section taken on the line ir-'4 of Fig. 2.
In its present illustrated embodiment, my invention comprises a substantially rectangular wire frame 1 having the sides 2 and 3 and end pieces 4: and 5. This frame is formed of one length of wire bent interme diate its ends to give the desired quadrilateral configuration. In this connection it is to be noted that although I have stated that my impoved frame is constructed of be understood that any other suitable material may be employed 'if found more desirable. The end piece Q of frame 1 is offset intermediate its length as at l, the portion between the arm 4 and the offset 4 forming a vertically projecting shoulder (i mtermediate the length of the end around which the fastening cord is adapted to be passed 1n a manner hereinafter to be stated. The other end piece 5 is provided with a laterally extending loop 7 intermediate its end. The loop 7 enables the knotted end of the cord 8 to be quickly and conveniently adjusted to the end piece 5 as will be clearly understood without further description.
The side pieces 2 and 3 are each formed intermediate their length with the vertically projecting shoulders 9 and 10 around which the fastening cord is passed as will be hereinafter described. In addition to the shoulder 9, side piece 2 is bent forwardly and then doubled upon itself as at 11 and the looped portion bent outwardly and rearwardly to hook 12 which engages the free end of the cord after the same has been passed around the package to be tied as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
In utilizing this improved package tying appliance, the same is placed upon thepackform the laterally offset clasp or age to be tied and the knotted end of the cord 8 is engaged inthe loop 7 of the end piece 5; said cord is then passed under the package to end piece 4, around one edge of shoulder 6 thereon and thence diagonally across the frame to side piece 2; it is next extended around one edge of shoulder 9 on side piece 2 and then again passed under the package to side piece 3. The cord is now carried around one edge of shoulder 10 on side piece 3 and across the frame through the looped portion 11 to the side piece 2. The free end of said cord is disposed first between the side piece 2 and the lower edge of the hook 12 and then between the bill of the hook 12 and the looped portion 11 of side piece 2 where it will he frictionally engaged and firmly retained in adjusted position. When it is desirable to untie the packshown the same as passed but once around, me
however, if desirable, :the cord may extend several times around said package in any direction, the free end being readily engaged in the hook 12 as Willioe readily understood Without further description.
Although in the foregoing description'l have set forth a certain structure as best adapted to perform the functions allotted to it, nevertheless, it will be understood that various and minor changes as to form, substance, etc, may be resorted to Within the scope of the appended claim without departing from or sacrificing any of the principles of this invention.
Having now described my inwention What I claim is:
A package tying device of the character described comprising single piece of wire bent to form a rectangular frame, each of the side pieces of said frame being arched upwardly midway their lengths to form alined shoulders having one of their edges projecting vertically therefrom, one of the end pieces of said frame being provit with an outwardly extending knot loop, the other end piece being offset 1 \vardly midway its length, the portion a jacent the offset portion of said end pie forming a vertically projecting'shor one of the side pieces of said frame bent forwardly and then doubled upon 1r to form an upwardly extending grip in, member, said doubled portion hein outwardiy and rearwardly upon inse form a rearwardly extending gripping moniher.
In testimony whereof I have her-er" m hand in presence of two subscri Witnesses.
