To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EARL E. STEELE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rope-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in rope fasteners, that is to a metal device that will cooperate with the terminal of a' rope and provide a fixed abutment in lieu of a knot from the body of the rope, as is the usual practice, one object of the invention being the provision of a strip of malleable metal provided with openings for the reception of the rope which is coiled coeXtensively therewith, so that the metal strip is iirmly attached to the rope.
A further object of the present device is the provision of means for forming a permanent knot at the end of a rope, such as a sash cord and clothes line, the strip when used with the latter being provided with a free attaching end, whereby the same may engage a hook or other supporting connection, and thus render it unnecessary to tie the rope in a number of knots.
1n the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view 0f a rope fastener embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is aside elevation thereof in coiled formation. Fig. 8 is a view of the same applied to a sash cord. Fig. i is a similar view as applied to a clothes line and supporting hook.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates a metal strip, which is malleable and readily coiled to present the partial coil 11, having the embraced substantially diametrical terminal 12, and the long terminal 13. Formed through. the body of the strip are preferably the three apertures le and 15, the two apertures 14, being circular, while the aperture 15 is provided with the ii-shaped portion 16, longitudinally of the strip and extending toward the terminal 1Q, the strip 10 being bent at 17, intermediate of the elongated opening 15.
In using the present fastener upon a sash cord 18, the eXtreme endof the cord is passed through the opening 14 nearestthe opening 15, and then extended through the opening 15, to assume the position as shown in Fig. 3, the metal strip being cut ofi' at 19.
By pulling upon the sash cord the hooked end portion thereof at its point of engagement with the angular portion 17 of the metal knot will be wedged in the portion 16 of the opening 15, and thus securely lock the fastener upon the cord.
lVhen the device is used upon a clothes line, the terminal 2() thereof is inserted in the same manner, but the long terminal of the device with the other opening 14 is re tained, so that the opening 14 may be passed over the supporting hook 21, as shown clearly in Fig. 4.
That I claim as new is 1. A fastener for a rope comprising a strip of relatively stiff material bent at one end` portion thereof to provide a partial coil and a straight terminal extended within the coil parallel with the remaining portion of said strip, said strip being provided with apertures, one of which is located at the bight between the coil and said straight portion and having a wedge portion while the other aperture is located in the coil at one side of the plane of said portion.
2. A fastener for rope, made from a strip of metal and provided with a plurality of apertures, one of which is provided with a wedging portion, said strip being bent to form a partial coil having one straight terminal embraced by the coil, the aperture with the wedging portion being at the junction of the coil and the straight terminal.
3. A fastener for rope, made from a strip Of metal and provided with a plurality of apertures, one of which is provided with a wedging portion, said strip being bent to form a partial coil having one straight terminal embraced by the coil, the aperture with the wedging portion being at the junction of the coil and the straight terminal, the other, terminal of the strip being eX- tended in an opposite direction to the embraced terminal and having an aperture to receive' a supporting hook, the intermediate and wedging apertures forming receptacles for the rope.
