UNITED STATES FRANK A. DECKER, OF FLAGLER, COLORADO.
WIRE-HOLDING DEVICE.
Application filed August 16, 1922. Serial N0. 582,278.
To aZZ 10 7mm it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK A. Dnoxnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Flagler, in'the county of Kit Carson and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVire-Holding Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to wire holding devices, and more particularly to wire holding devices for use in connection with wire stretchers.
An object of the invention is to provlde a device of this character capable of being attached to any wire stretcher for holding wire without the necessity of adjustment.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character substantially in the form of a double hook member Wherein a strand of barb wire is not only held by the device, but prevented from disengagement therefrom and wherein the major portion of the strand of wire is permitted to substantially align with the major portion of the wire holding devices.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a holding member of this character in the form of a hook member, the bight portion of the hook member being extended to one side to provide a second hook member for holding wire disposed between the bill and shank of the hook.
lVith these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more particularly described, fully claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of a wire holding device constructed in accordance with an embodiment of the invention and showing the same in use;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the structure shown in Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is an end elevation.
Referring to the drawings, 5 designates a bar or shank having its end portion 6 flattened to enlarge the same, said end portion being provided with a relatively large opening 7 adapted to receive a chain or like connecting member for connecting the device to a wire stretcher.
The opposite end portion 8 of the shank is reverted with respect to the major portion of the shank to provide a hook, the bill 9 0f the hook havingits lower portion disposed substantially parallel to the shank 5, while its extremity or upper portion 10 is extended outwardly to provide an entrance and facilitate application of the wire to the hook and to also prevent the extremity 1.0 from engaging the wire when the wire is being stretched. It will be noted that the extremity 10 of the hook terminates at the central portion of the shank so as to provide a relatively deep hook and eliminate the possibility of the wire accidentally disengaging itself from the hook.
In order that the hook may be used to hold the strand of wire against the power of the wire stretcher and at the same time permit the wire to be efiiciently stretched, a second hook 11 is provided by extending the bight portion of the book, as Well as the adjacent portions of the bill 9 of the shank 5, laterally with respect to the bill and shank so that the bight portion or hook 11 extends to one side of the hill 9 and shank 5. By this novel arrangement the second hook 11 is disposed in angular relation to the first hook 9 and substantially provides a passage 12 which clears the shank and bill of the hook. In addition to serving as a hook, the bight portion 11 also serves as a stop to prevent movement of the wire with respect to the shank 5 and-bill 9.
This holding device is particularly adapted for use in stretching barb wire. To stretch the wire the device is placed upon a strand of barb wire so that the hook portion 11 is disposed upwardly to permit the bill to pass over a portion of the hook between the barbs of the wire. The barb nearest to the hook 11 is then urged into engagement with the bight portion or hook 11 so as to substantially kink that portion of the wire engaged with the hook 11. In view of the fact that the reverted end of the shank is relatively long, there is no possibility of the wire accidentally slipping from the hook 11. It will also be noted that by offsetting the bight portion of the book 9 to provide a second hook, that the strand of wire to be stretched is disposed substantially in alignment with the stretching means so that a direct pull is possible. In addition to this, the barb of the wire engages the portions of the shank 5 and bill 9 adjacent the hook 11, thereby obstructing passage of the barb through the hook 11 and firmly holding the wire. In order to release the Wire it is only necessary to release the wire stretcher and disengage the barb fromfthej hook Ll. No further securing means other than the hook 1.1 is necessary.
From the foregoing it will be readily seen that this invention provides a novel holding device for stretching barb wire wherein the" wire may be engaged with a double hookv V A Wire holder consisting of a lengthof material having one end portion thereof resignature.
portion being extended laterally with respect to the major portion of said shank and said reverted portion to position saidbight portion to one side of themajor'portion of said shank and the bight portion, said bight portion being adapted to receive a length of barb wire,'one of the barbs ot the wire being arranged to engage said bight portion to prevent movement ofthe wire relative to the wire holder. v
In testimony whereof FRANK A. DECKER.
