Description

No. 864,937. PATENTED SEPT. 3,1907. .0. G. THOMPSON.
CLOTHES LINE FASTENER. APPLICATION rum) NOV.17.1908.
TIE-ri w m w;
UNITED STATES CHARLES GASTON THOMPSON, OF WILKINSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
CLOTHES-LINE FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 3, 1907.
Application filed November 17,1906- Serial No. 343,908-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES GASTON THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilkinsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (llothes liine Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for fastening clothes-lines and the like, and consists in the novel construction hm-einafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention. is to provide a simple, inexpensive and practical device of this character to which a clothes'line may be quickly and effectively secured and from which it may be as readily released.
The above and other objects which will appear as the nature of the inventhm is better understood, are accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accoi n panying drawings, in which,
Figure 'l is a side elevation of my improved clothesline fastener; Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section taken en ti e plane indicated by the line 22 in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the plane indicated by the line .i-3 in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a view, showing a line or rope applied to the fastener.
My improved clothes-line fastener is in the form of a double hook or chat adapted to be secured upon a wall, post or other support and about which the clothes-line may be readily wrapped or wound. The device comprises a fastening head 1 which resembles in shape, an arrow head and which is formed upon the outer end of a stem or shank 2. The inner end of the latter may be provided with a screw-threaded point or with any other means by which it may be secured upon a support, but I preferably form upon said end of the shank a cross piece 3 having apertures 4 for the reception of screws or other fastening devices. The cross piece or block 3is preferably of rectangular form and has a flat, rear face to engage the flat surface of a support. The arrowshaped fastening head 1. is disposed vertically and has n-ojecting from its bread or enlarged rear end two outwardly curved horns or projections 5. The forwardly tapering, front or outer end 6 of the head 1 is bifurcated by a V-shaped slot or notch 7 which divides said end into two similar V-shaped points 8. The notch 7 extends into the head approximately two-thirds of its length and terminates in a point 9 so that the clothesline may be tightly wedged therein to prevent slippin The head or body 1 is substantially flat, that is, the op posite sides of its central portion are flat and parallel, but it is of gradually decreasing thickness from its center to its outer edges, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings.
In use, it will be seen that the device is rigidly secured upon a wall, post or other support by screws passed through the openings 4 in its base or cross piece 3, and that the clothes line or the like after being passed around the upper horn of the arrow shaped head, is then drawn into the V-shaped notch 7 until it is tightly wedged therein. The line is then passed around the stem or shank 2 and then wrapped one or more times around the arrow shaped body and its horn as shown in Fig. 4 or in any other suitable manner so that it will be effectively secured to the device. When the line is thus secured it will be impossible for it to slip and since no knotting or tying of the line is necessary, it may be quickly and easily released from the device. Owing to its simple nature, it will be seen that the device may be cast in a single piece of metal at a comparatively small expense.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is,
A device of the character described comprising a flat body having the arrow shaped head 1 formed at its ta pered outer end (i with the V-shapcd notch 7, said head being also formed at its enlarged rear end with the outwardly and rearwardly projecting horns 5, said horns lying'in the longitudinal plane of the body, and the attaching shank 2 projecting rearwardly from the middle of the enlarged rear end of the arrow shaped head and midway between said horns. said shank being also in the longitudinal plane of the body, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto atiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
