g I N VEN TOR.
JOSEBH W. JOHNSON, OF NEWIBURGH', NEW YORK.
CLAMP.
Specification of Lettersl'atentj Patented Aug. 16, 1921'.
Application filed October 20, 1920. Serial No. 418,168.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH W. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newburgh, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to clamps and more particularly to that type of clamp adapted to support or hold a cable, line or pulley in a taut or loose osition.
One of the 0 jects of the invention is directed to a clamp of the above type wherein the cable, line or pulley carried thereby will be clamped by the weight of the article suspended from the clamp.
A still further object of my invention resides in a substantially rectangular interlocking block or clamp wherein the interlocking sections will act as a clamp for a cable, line or pulley suspended therefrom.
- With these objects in view and others which will be manifest and suggested as the nature and purpose of my invention are revealed in the following specification and drawing wherein I have shown a practical, yet preferred embodiment thereof, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section to show the interlockingsections of the clamp.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the clamp. Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the clamp comprises a substantially rectangular block 1 consisting of a head or supporting block 2 and an interlocking member 3. The head block'2 is provided with a transverse groove or slot 4 extending entirely through the same whereby a rope, cable or pulley 5 may be passed therethrough and tied in a knot 6 so that the clamp and its rope may be suspended from a support.
A tongue 7 formed integral with the supporting block and rounded or beveled at its lower terminal 8 is adapted to frictionally slide within the U-shaped slot 9 formed in the interlocking member 3. The slot 9 extends entirely throughout the width of the said member 3 and for a distance somewhat slightly below the center thereof. A transverse aperture 10 substantially medially of the tongue portion 7 is adapted to lie in direct alinement with transverse apertures 11 fastening and clamping the rope after it is passed through the alined apertures above described, I also provide a transverse aperture 12 near the lower end of the member 3, said aperture 12 terminating in a longitudinal, U-shaped slot or groove 13 formed in one face of the said member 3. Referring particularly to Fig. 1 it will be apparent that the function of the lower slot and groove 12, 13 will be to tightly clamp the horizontal portion 14 and vertical extension 15 of the rope. It will now be understood that after the rope is passed through the alined apertures 10, 11 and then through the transverse aperture 12, any pull or tension exerted on either end of the rope which will tend to separate the two interlocking sections will be prevented by the bight or crimp 16 formed in the rope. Of course the greater the pull or tension exerted to separate the sections, the
. tighter the clamping action results, and the rope can only be loosened when the apertures are moved in direct alinement to each other. In the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated my invention embodied in one form by way of example, and which in practice has been found to be highly satisfactory in obtaining the desired results. It will be obvious however that other embodiments may be adopted, and that various changes in the details of construction may be resorted to by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. It is furthermore understood that the invention is not necessarily limited or restricted to the precise elements shown except in so far as such limitations are specified in the subject matter being claimed.
What I claim is:
In a clamp of the class described comprising a rectangular, sectional block substantially square in cross section, one of said sections having a transverse aperture formed therein for receiving a flexible supporting element and provided with a central, elongated, fiat tongue portion formed integral Pram oFFIC -Z with the head or body portion of the said the aperture in said flat tongue and a right section, said tongue being also provided with angular groove in the lower body of said a transverse aperture at its center, the other second section for receiving the flexible eleof said sections being substantially of the inent after it is passed through the alined v 5 same length as the first named section and apertures in the sides and tongue portion of 15 provided with a, longitudinally extending the first named section. U-shaped groove of the same length as the In testimony whereof,I affix my signature flat tongue to receive the same in interlockhereto. ing relation, and having alined apertures 10 centrally of the sides for registration with JOSEPH W. JOHNSON.
