UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CORNELIUS O. GOULD, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGN- MENTS, TO THE GOULD FASTENER COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HOLDER FOR CLOTHES-LINES, &c.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS C. GOULD,
. a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Holder for Clothes-Lines, &c., of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a holder for a clothes line, etc., composed of members which are adapted to have the line hooked or looped thereon and held by a tight bight against slipping and admitting of the easy application and removal of the line, while also having means for firmly securing it to a fence, post, etc., and retaining it uniformly thereon, as will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims.
For the purpose of explaining the invention, the accompanying drawing illustrates a satisfactory reduction of the same to practice, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific arrangement and organization shown and described.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a holder for a line, etc., embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation thereof. F1g. 3 represents a plan view thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawing:-A designates the holder, the same being composed of the side arms B, B, the central bar C, the vertical limb or hook D, the vertical shoulder E, and screw shank F, said parts being continuous of each other and formed of a single piece of bearing wire or other suitable metal or mate rial. The shoulder E is of the form of a loop, and has the shank F extending therethrough and projecting rearwardly therefrom. One of the side arms B is continuous of one of the side members G of the shoulder E, and the other side arm is continuous of the inner end of the screw shank F. The inner terminals of said arm B are bent and crossed as at H, and thereby interlocked with each other and with the top part of the other member J of the shoulder E. The arms B converge to the portions K, Where they approach the central bar C and form together a pair of jaws, between which the clothes line or rope will be Specification of Letters Patent.

placed and held as shown in Fig. 1, said arms then diverging and continued inwardly toward each other forming the bends L, which add resiliency to said arms, each bend then forming one of the two members M, M, of which the central bar C is composed, said members being continued upwardly and bent into the limb D, which joins the inner terminal portions of said members, and is adapted to have the line or rope looped or hooked over the same, as shown in Fig. 1, the invontion being hereinafter described as a holder for a clothes line.
The operation is as follows :The device is screwed into a fence, post, etc., by the shank F, when the shoulder E abuts against said fence, etc. and so firmly retains its position, the remaining portion of the device projecting outwardly from the fence, etc. A clothes line is bent into the form of a loop P, which latter is passed upwardly from below through the space N rearward of the limb D, and then hooked upon the latter, the portions Q of the line extending from said loop P, then being drawn between the side arms B and central bar C, when owing to the converging nature of said arms, and the jaws they form with said arms, they will be wedged therewith, the resultant bight preventing the line from slipping from said jaws or the limb l). \Vhen the line is released, the loop P may be raised, when the line leaves the jaws and post and may be drawn through the space N, and so entirely disconnected from the holder, it being evident that the space N readily permits the movement of the loop and adjacent portions of the line in the application and removal of the same, said space being occasioned by terminating the inner end of the bar C some distance forward of the rear ends of the side arms.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a holder of the character stated, arms, a bar intermediate thereof and forming a resilient connection between said arms, and a hook rising from the inner end of said intermediate bar.
2. A holder of the character stated comprising side arms, a bar forming a resilient connection between the front ends of said side arms, a hook extending at substantially a right angle to said bar at the inner end CIT thereof between the ends of said arms, said arms being at the sides of said bar and forming jaws therewith.
3'. A holder of the character stated comprising side arms, a bar forming a resilient connection between the front ends of said side arms, a hook extending at substantially a right angle to said bar at the inner end thereof between the ends of said arms, said arms being at the sides of said bar and forming jaws therewith, and an attaching device extending from one of said arms.
4. In a holder of the character stated, a plurality of arms, a bar, and a vertical hook, the latter rising from said bar at the inner end thereof, and arms beingrespectively at the sides of said bar forming jaws therewith, and an att-achingdevice extending from one of said arms, and a vertical loop forming a shoulder continuous of the rear of the other arm, said attaching device passing through said loop.
5. In a holder of the character stated, an arm, and a bar at the side thereof forming a jaw, an attaching member for the holder, a hook rising from the inner end of said bar and a loop forming a shoulder continuous of said arm at the inner end thereof, said member passing through said loop.
6. A line holder of the character stated composed of side arms, an intermediate bar and a limb rising from the inner end of said bar, said arms being joined at their front and rear ends, the inner terminal of said bar being removed from the inner terminals of said side arms forming a space for the insertion and removal of a line into and from the same.
7. In a holder of the character stated, pair of arms, a bar intermediate thereof, the rear ends of said arms being interlockinglycrossed, said arms converging toward their front ends, resilient means connecting said front ends and joining said bar, and an attaching member for the holder at the rear end thereof.
8. In a holder of the character stated, a
pair of arms, a bar intermediate thereof, the
rear ends of said arms being interlockinglycrossed, said arms converging toward their front ends, there being resilient means connecting each front end to said bar, and a shoulder at the rear end of one of said arms.
9. A line holder of the character stated composed of a pair of arms, a bar intermediate thereof, the rear ends of said arms being interlockingly-crossed, said arms converging toward their front ends, there being resilient means connecting each front end to said bar,
an attaching member for the holder project- J ing from the rear end of one of said arms, and a shoulder on the rear end of the other arm.
