Partnr @ritieni VATIACl-llitlENT FOR THUNKS,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 744,988, dated November 24, 1903.
Application filed Aprll 14, 1903.
.To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, Roi-:ERT Wein, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Mc- Keesport, in the county of Allegheny and 'State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Attachments for Trunks, of which improvement the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in attachments for trunks, the object being to provide a dressing-table which may be folded within the trunk when it is closed; but when said trunk is open the table may be extended for use.
A'further object ot' this invention is to pro- Vide a plurality of drawers within said attachment for the holding of toilet or other desired articles.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In describing the invention in'detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughoutthe several views,inwhich- Figure l i's a front elevation showing the trunk-lid open and the table in position. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same, and'Fig. 3 is a transverse elevation of the lid in the closed position and the table collapsed with the end of the trunk removed.
The reference-numeral l indicates the body portion of the trunk, and 2 the lid thereof, said body and lid being of any well-known construction.
Pivotally connected to the lid 2 at its forward or opening side is the box portion 3 of the table, in which the drawers e et 4 are provided. The upper side of this box portion 3 is recessed to receive the extension-piece 5 of the table, which is pivotally connected to said box portion 3 at its free or outer end.
The lid 2 of the trunk is held in its open position by the usual toggle-brace 6, one end of which is connected with the body portion l and the other with the lid 2, and an auxiliary togglebrace 7 is connected between the Serial No. 152.511. (No model.)
lid 2 and the forward end of the box p0rtion 3 of the table for the purpose of maintaining the same in a horizontal position when it is in use. Should a larger table be desired than that furnished by the box portion 3 of the table, the latch S, which may be of any well-known form, is released, thereby permitting the extension-piece 5 to be unfolded, and by partially withdrawing one or more of the drawers a suitable support for the same is formed. Separate braces for the extensionpieee may be provided, if desired.
A latch 9, provided on the lfree end of the box portion or extension-piece, is provided for the purpose of securing the box portion within the lid when the table is not in use or the trunk is closed, and rotatable or other form rof latches IO are provided between the drawers to secure the said drawers against displacement.
While I have herein described my invention in detail, it will be noted that various slight changes may be made in the construction without departing from the general spirit of the same.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a device of the character described, the combination of a body, a hinged lid thereon, a table pivoted to the upperedge of said lid, toggle-links for holding said lid in a substantially vertical position, toggle-joints pivoted to the outer edge of said table and to the lower edge of said lid for supporting the table in a horizontal position, an extension-piece in said table, a plurality of drawers, said drawers underlying and forming a support for said extension-piece,mcans for securing said drawers in their closed position, and a latch on the outer edge of said table for holding the same against the lid when in a closed position, substantially as described. i
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
