UNITED STATES WILLIAM NELsoN, or NEW YORK, N; Y.
COMBINATION TRUNK AND IRONING BOARD.
Application filed July 22,' 1925.
To al& "whom it ?wg concern:
Be it known that-I, VVILLIAM NnLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county ofNew York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Inprovenents in a Combination Trunk and Ironing Board, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved new article of manufacture comprising a trunk', and an ironing board,` the ironing board being mounted in the trunk in such a way that it may be moved to and held in an operative position, or nay be folded against one side of the trun'k to dispose it in an outof-the-way position when the tru'nk is in transit.-
Briefiy, I provide a trunk made up :of a pair of hinged ly connected half-sections.
on the Vertical Wall of one of thehalf sections I provide a pivotally mounted bracket, and on this bracket I rockably mount the ironing board. On a right angular wall of the, same section of the trunk I provide a retain'ng bracket with which a complemental retaining bracket on the adjacent end of the ironing board coaets for holding the ironing board in a horizontal operative position.
These details will be more plainly understood by referring to the aecompanying drawing in which:
. Figure 1 is a perspective View of a trunk, and ironing board constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged cross section through the ironing board and the supporting bracket therefor.
Figure 3 is a View showing a catch for holding the board in inoperative position.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the reference character l designates one-half section of the trunk, and 2 designates the other half section. The first named section 1 is provided at its top with a hook 3 engageable with an eye or keeper l on the other section for holding the two sections apart in the ap n'oxinate angular relation showing. The ironing board is supported in the section 2, and considering this section more carefully it will be seen that the bottom wall is indicated at 5, and the complemental side wall at 6. These are the only two walls of the trunk that cooperate directly with the ironing board, and a description of the other walls is therefore unnecessary.
Serial No. 45,336.
Mounted atvertically spaced points on the intermediate part of the wall 6' are bearings-7 in 'which the downturned ends of a supporting braclret 8 are ournaled for rotation. This allows the bracket to swing` at right angles .to the wali (i, or against the wall in parallelism` as indicated in Figure i o. The intermediate portion of the en-larged is an angular cleat ll, and fasten'ed to' the' inner end of the ironing boardis a comple mental cleat 12. These two cleats are adapted to be interlocked indicated in Figure l to hold the ironing` board in operative' position. In addi tion,` a resilientcatch 13' is fastened to the wall :6 at' any' appropriate board in an inoppoint to hold the ironing era'tive position.
With the ironing'board in the' horizontal 'operative position shown in Figure l it is obvious that by lifting up the outer end of the same, and tilting the inner end downwardly by rocking the board about the bracket 8, the cleats 11 and 12 may be disengaged. Then the board can be swung out suficiently so that the cleat 12 will clear the cleat 11 whereby to permit the board to be swung down to the folded position represented in Figure 3. Then the b raeket and board may be swung inwardly against the inner face of the Wall 6 of the trunk and the catch 13 engaged with the board to hold the same in that position.
i No doubt, a careful consideration of the drawings in connection with the specification will enable persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates to obtain a clear understanding of the same. Therefore, a more lengthy description is thought unnecessary. v
While the preferred embodinent .of the invention has been shown and described, it is to be understood that minor changes coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to if desired.
` Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination with a cabinet open at its front, a horizontal swinging bracket supported on the inner face of one of the side walls of the -cabinet adjacent the forward edge thereot, an ironng board ;fulcruned adjacent its inner end on the horizontal portion of the bracket and adapted to Swing in a vertical plane, and cooperating means associated With the inner end of the board and the rear Wall of the cabinet for maintaining the board in a horizontal operative position, said bracket being adapted to Swing rearwardly and inwardly toward the aforenentioned side Wall of the cabinet, When the aforenentioned cooperating means is disengaged to permit the ironing board to be disposed in a'vertical inoperative position adjacent the side Wall ot' the cabinet.
2. In eonbination With a cabinet open at its front, a horizontaily swinging bracket supported on the inner face of one of the side Walls of the cabinet adjacent the forward edge thereof, an ironing board fulcruned adjacent its inner end on the horizontal portion of the bracket and adapted to Swing in a Vertical plane and cooperating means associated With the inncr end of the board and the rear wall of the cabinet for maintaining the board in a horizontal operative position, said bracket being adapted to Swing rearwardly and inwardly toward the aforementioned side Wall of the cabinet, When the aforenentioned cooperating` means is disengaged to pernit the ironing board to be disposed in a Vertical inoperative position adjacent the side wall of the cabinct, and a spring clip secu'cd on the innenface of the atorementioned side Wall of the cabinct adjaeent the rear Wall and adapted to engage the adjacent side edge of the ironing board When the latter is disposed in a vertical inoperative position.
In conbnation With a cabinet open at its front, a horizontally swinging bracket supported on the inner face of one of the side Walls of the cabinet adjaccnt the forward free edge thereof, an ironing board fulcrunied ad acent its inner end on the horizontal portion of the bracket and adapted to Swing thereon in a Vertical plane, a cleat Secured on the rear Wall of the cabinet, a coaoting cleat carried by the inner end of the ironing board, said cleat being r adapted for interlockng engagement Whereby the ironing board is maintained in a horizontal operative position, the bracket being adapted to Swing inwardly and rearwardly toward the aforenentioned side Wall of the cahinet when the cleats are dsengaged to pernit the ironing board to be swung to a vertical inoperative position adjacent the aforenentioned side wall of the eabinet, and a spring catch attached to the side wall of the eabinet and cooperating With the roning board for naintaning the same in its inoperative position.
In testinony Whereo'fI aiiix my signature;
VVILLIAM NELSON.
