Be it known that I, HARRY F. MoDoNNELL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Latrobe, in the county of Testmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cabinets, of which the following is a speci fication.

This invention relates to cabinets, and has for its objects to produce a comparatively simple inexpensive device of this character designed especially for use as awashstand and one having various compartments which are readily accessible for the introduction or removal of their contents.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character equipped with an ironingboard, one in which the board will normally occupy a folded unobstructing position and may be readily positioned for use and one in which the board will when in unfolded position be firmly supported.

A further object of the invention is to provide the device with a mirror which may be readily adjusted to convenient positions for use.

With these and other objects in view the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of acabinet embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section through the same. Fig. 4 is a front elevation, partly in section, the section being taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3, with the top portion of the frame broken away; and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the device with the ironing-board in position for use.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the cabinet, comprising a front wall 2, a rear wall 3, end walls 4, and a top wall 5, to which latter there is secured vertical supports 6, designed to sustain a shelf 7, there being provided in one of the end walls 4 an opening 8, leading to an inner compartment 9 and normally closed by a door 10, hinged at its lower edge in ears 11 and provided with pivoted supporting'legs 12, which normally hang by gravity in vertical position and are adapted when the door is open to swing to position for supporting the outer edge of the door, thus to form a shelf or foot-rest. Hinged to the top wall 5 and forming a part thereof is a cover 13, designed to be opened, for gaining access to an inner compartment 14 and having fixed to its lower face an arm or cleat 15, to which is pivoted one end of a link 16, having its other end pivoted to a cleat 17, fixed upon the inner face of a movable section or leaf 18, hinged to and constituting a part of the front wall 2, the link connection 16 being such that as the cover 13 is swung upward the leaf 18 will be automatically and simultaneously folded downward, While arwhen the leaf is folded downward may be moved to open position.

Hinged, as at 20, to the rear wall 3 of the cabinet is a pair of normally vertical foldable members or standards 21, connected adjacent their upper ends by transverse braces 22, arranged in pairs to form guides for the reception of sliding elements or bars 23, which carry a mirror-frame 24, in which is pivoted a mirror 25, the bars 23 being adapted for longitudinal movement to adjust the mirror for use, while upon the front faces of the braces 22 there are attached vertical connectingbars 26, which serve to maintain the bars 23 in place. The members 21 terminate at their lower ends in a plane flush with that of the upper face of the shelf 7, and attached to one of said standards is a rigid depending locking member or arm 27, designed to bear normally upon the rear face of the wall 3 and provided adjacent its lower end with an opening or slot 28 to receive a latch member 29 in the form of a turn-button pivoted to the cabinet and adapted to be turned to a position transversely of and for engagement with the arm 27, as illustrated in Fig. 2, there being attached to the lower end of the arm a flexible element or chain 30, which is also secured at 31 to the body of the cabinet, this chain serving to receive the strain when the standards 21 are folded for presenting the ironing-board 32 in position for use. Fixed upon the rear face of the other standard 21 is an engaging member or tongue 33, designed to enter a recessed cleat 34, fixed upon the inner or lower face of the ironing-board 32 at a point adjacent one end of the latter, there being carried by the board a fixed stud or pin 35, which enters a perforation 36, provided in a cross-piece 37, fixed to the adjacent standard 2]. and serving, in conjunction with the interengaging members 33 34, to firmly but detachably secure the board to the standard, whereby the board will in practice move with its supporting-frame, which latter comprises ranged with the cabinet is a drawer 19, which IUO the hinged bars or standards 21 and the connecting-braces 22.

Pivotally connected at its upper end to one of the standards 21 through the medium of one of the braces 22 is a bracing member or leg 38, in turn pivoted adjacent its center to the cabinet by means of a pintle or axle 39,

, entered through a slot 40, extending longitudinally of the member 38, the construction being such that when the board-supporting frame is folded downward for bringing the board to active position the leg 38 will be swung-automatically to supporting position, as illustrated in Fig. 5, and will when the frame is swung to normal position be returned to an unobstructing position at the side of the cabinet, as illustrated in Fig. 1.

In practice the compartment 8, adapted to receive blacking, shoe-brushes, and the like, is normally closed by the door 10, which when moved to open position, as illustrated in Fig. 1, constitutes a shoe-rest, While the compartments 14 and 19 are normally closed by means of the lid 13 and leaf 18, which move simultaneously to open position, as heretofore explained, it being understood that the drawer 19 is maintained normally in closed position by the leaf 18. When the foldable frame is in normal position, the extension 27 on one of the standards 21 is engaged by the turn-button 29, as seen in Fig. 2, thus to lock the frame against movement, and the ironing-board is detachably engaged with said frame and adapted for movement therewith, owing to the engagement of tongue 33 with the recessed cleat 34 and pin 35 with opening 36, it being understood that the board may be detached when desired by unseatin the pin from the opening and the recessed cleat from the tongue. When it is desired to use the board, the button 29 is turned to register with opening 28, thus permitting the frame, which includes members 21, to be folded forwardly, as seen in Fig. 5, this movement of the frame serving to swing the leg or supporting element 38 auwhich is pending arm provided tomatically to supporting position, while the forward movement of the frame is limited by the shelf 7, on which it rests, and the strain on the parts relieved by means of chain 80. The mirror 25, which may be utilized for shaving or other toilet purposes, normally occupies an unobstructing position, as seen in Fig. 1, but may be positioned for use by moving the guide-bars 23 longitudinally outward within the guides 22.

From the foregoing it is apparent that I produce a comparatively simple inexpensive device of this character admirably adapted for the attainment of the ends in view, it being understood that minor changes in the details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claimis 1. The combination with a cabinet, of a standard hinged thereto and having a dewith an opening, a turn-button adapted for entrance through said opening and to be turned into engagement with the standard, and a board attached to and adapted for movement with the latter.

2. The combination with a cabinet, of a supporting-standard hinged thereto to swing from a vertical to a horizontal. position, a depending arm carried by the standard, a latchv ing member adapted for engagement with said arm to lock the standard in vertical position, an ironing-board attached to and for movement with the standard, and a supporting-leg pivoted between its ends and operatively engaged with the standard for automatic movement thereby to supporting position.
