FURNITURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 12, 1906.
Application filed Tune 16,1905. Serial No. 265,535.
To all whom, t mag/concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HOLDING AB- ERCROMBIE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Poughkeepsie, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Furniture, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in household furniture, and particularly to combined screens and washstands, the obj ect being to provide a device of this character particularly adapted for use in small rooms or where furniture-space is limited, the device being so constructed that the shelving and other parts will fold closely against the screen convenient for storage 0r placing closely against a wall.
I will describe furniture embodying my invention and then point out the .novel features in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of thisspeciiication, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the front of a combined screen and washstand embodying my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views, one illustrating the shelving in position for use, while the other indicates the parts as folded; and Fig. 4 is a bot- Jvom end view of the arrangement shown in The screen comprises a frame 1, in which any suitable ornamental material 2 may be placed. Secured vertically on the rear side of the screen are cleats 3, and mounted to swing on these cleats is the upper shelf 4, on which the washbowl and other devices for the toilet may be placed, and also swinging on the lower portion of the cleats is the lower shelf 5, on which a water-pitcher may be placed. Hinged to the under side of the shelf 4 near its front edge are bracket-straps 6, the lower ends of which are turned slightly outward, as indicated at 7, and these portions 7 have outwardly-opening slots 8 for receiving lugs 9 on the rear side of the screen to support the shelf 4 in horizontal position.
Mounted to swin on the lower side of the bottom bar of the frame 1 are bars 10, each when swung outward forming feet for the screen, and these bars are provided with notches 11 for receiving lugs 12 on the under side of the bottom shelf 5, thus not only holding the bars lO from accidentally swinging inward, but preventing upward movement accidentally of the bottom shelf.
When the device is not in use, the shelves may be swung closely against the screen and the bars 10 swung underneath the screen, as clearly indicated in Fig, 3.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a household screen, a single panel, bars pivoted between their ends to the panel beneath the bottom edge of the same to swing horizontally and adapted to support thepane in a vertical position or to fold beneath the edge of the same, a shelf pivoted to one face of the panel near its lower edge to fold from a vertical position to a horizontal position resting on said bars when extended, and interlocking means between said shelf and bars.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE HOLDING ABERCROMBIE. Witnesses:
SARAH O. DARROW, CHAs. F. CossuM.
