SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 742,958, dated November -3, 1903.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, JOHN L. BLAIR, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Jose,

county of Santa Clara, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Foldable Holders for Railway-Folders; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

My'invention relates toimprovements in receptacles for holding railway-folders, timecards, advertising-cards, and the like. Its object is to provide a foldable container of pasteboard or equivalent material which shall be cheap in manufacture and which may be knocked down into a flat condition for transportation. It is designed particularly as a substitute for the ordinary open-ended tin boxes used in railway-depots, hotels, and other places to hold folders and other advertising matter. 4

The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more fully described, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view showing the manner of cutting. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of holder when set up.

In carrying out my invention I take a sheet of cardboard or other suitable cheap material possessing the required rigidity and pliancy and cut it into an essentially T form, so as to comprise a central section A, the opposed lateral sections 2 2, and the lower section 3. The

2 and 3 are creased along their lines of juncture with A, as at 4. Other creases 5 are made in each of

2 and 3 parallel with creases at and distant therefrom the desired thickness of the holder. The receptacle is formed by simply folding section 3 on lines 4 5 till it stands parallel with A and then bending sections 2 2 on their lines 4 5 over upon the back of 3, the portions 6 intermediate of each of the pairs of lines 4: 5 standing perpendicular to A to form the sides and bottom of the holder. Section A, which forms the front of the holder, is cut in diagonal or inclined lines at a at the top to expose the upper edge of the back formed by the overlapping of

2 and 3. The top edges of the sides 6 slope up from the upper edge of A to meet the sections 2.

If desired, the part of A and 6, represented as cut at a in Fig. 1, may be folded over upon the front and sides, as in Fig. 2, to give a reinforced edge to the top of the holder.

The purpose of making the holder with the back projecting above the front and of providing the front with a central perforation 7 is to allow the device to be readily tacked to a wall or other suitable support.

In operation a properly-cut blank is folded as described and a tack passed through perforation 7 and the overlapping

2 and 3 and driven into the wall. The device may be also tacked along the upper projecting edge of the back. Thus it is seen and What is important to note that the same means by which the device is secured to the wall serve to hold the parts in rigid box form and neither paste, strings, or interlocking ends are necessary. In fact, the holder is not complete until it has been tacked up.

If desired, a circularreinforcing part 8 may be pasted to the front of A around the edge of perforation 7.

Suitable lettering, as the name of, the particular railroad whose folders or cards are supposed to be contained within the holder, may be printed upon the front of the holder, making a unique advertising device.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patout, is

1. A holder open at one end, and comprising a front section having lateral projections on three sides, said front section having a contrally-located opening and each of said projections foldably united with said front section, and said sections when folded combined rigidly together by the same means by which the holder is secured toa support.

2. A holder comprising a front section hava ing lateral projections on three sides foldably united therewith and forming the back of the holder, said front section having an opening for the purpose specified, and said front section and lateral projections adapted when folded in holder form to be rigidly retained in said form by the same means by which the holder is secured to the support.

3. An open-top holder comprising a blank formed with a central section and lateral projections adapted to be folded, said section forming the front of the holder and the projections overlapping and forming the back of the holder said frontosection having an opening in it enabling a fastening to be passed therethrough and through said overlapping rear portions to secure said sections simultaneously with the securing of the holder to the wall.

4. A blank for a foldable holder comprising a rectangular section having a centrallylocated opening and projections on three sides, said projections foldable along the line of juncture with said section to form the back of the holder,and each of said projections having creases or joints parallel with said lines and distant therefrom the intended thickness of the holder.

5. A blank for a foldable holder, comprisingarectangularperforated section, and foldable projections on three sides thereof and forming the back of the holder, said section upon the side not possessing a projection being incised intermediate of the two lateral projections.

6. A holder open at one end, the front of said holder having a central opening, the sides and bottom of said holder having a foldable connection with the front, and foldable overlapping extensions of said bottom and sides forming the back of the holder and extending above the front.

7. A holder, open at one end, the bottom and sides of said holder being foldably connected with the front thereof, foldable extensions to said bottom and sides overlapping and forming the back of the holder, the upper edges of said sides and front cut and folded over substantially as described to offer a reinforcement for the holder and to expose the upper portion of the back of the holder.
