Description

UNITED STATES atented October 6, 1903. d
PATENT EETCE,
DINING-ROOM CABINET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 740,420, dated October 6, 1903.
Application filed June 14, 1901. Serial No. 64,612. (No model.)
To all when@ t 17e/cry concern:
Be it known that I, SALLIE J. GIVAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newport, in the county of Campbell and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful' Improvement in Dining-Room Cabinets, Combininga Cabinet, Table, and Closet, of which the following is a specification.
My improvements relate to articles of household furniture more particularly intended for dining-room and kitchen use in which there is combined into one single article of furniture a cabinet and closet of the usual and ordinary construction and a table, which table when not in use is pushed back and concealed in a suitable recess within the cabinet, with the leaves of the table folded on each other, the table being arranged to be drawn out and supported at the rear by the edge of the cabinet and at the front by twoof the usual tablelegs. Y Y i In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved cabinet. Fig. 2 is a side View of same with the cabinet 'in section, showing lthe table extended and alsoits'position when pushed back into the cabinet as shown by the dotted lines.
Aisa china-closet consisting of back, sides,
and doors as a easement and provided with adjustable shelves of the ordinary and usuali The upper portion of the closet F is utilized for the reception of the table-leaves C D for the table, the front wall of the closet being cut away to allow these table-leaves to be pulled in and out.
C is the lower table-leaf, which is provided at its outer edge with the legs or supports E E, and to .which legs this table-leaf is permanently secured in any well-known way. Hinged to the front edge of the table-leaf C by the hinges a o is the table-leaf D, arranged to fold back on top of the leaf C when the table is pushed back into the recess in the closet and to be unfolded into the same horizontal plane with the table-leaf C when the same is drawn out for use.
K is a bracket or bar pivoted at its middle point at d to the under surface of the front edge of the table-leaf C between the legsEE.
When not in use, the leaf D is folded over on top of the leaf C and the table-leaves are pushed back into the recess in the upper portion of the closet, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 2. ,p
When it is desiredto use the table, the legs E are drawn out from the cabinet, drawing out the table-leaves until the blockb on the rear edge of the table-leaf C comes in contact with the upper edge of the front wall of the closet F. The bar or bracket K is then swung around at right angles to the plane of the table-legs and the table-leaf D unfolded and supported by this bracket,` when the table is ready for use, the rear of the table being supported by the front wall of the closet.
C is a iiap or cover hinged to the front wall of the closet at the opening inthe closet-wall provided for the reception of the table-leaves- `When the table-leaves have been folded and 4be extended, the iiap is raised and rcstsupon the leaf C, as shown in Fig. 1.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-` 1. In a dining-room cabinet, the combination, with a cabinet provided with a lower closet portion having the upper front wall cut away, ot table-leaves slidingin said opening, hinged to fold together, with supports for the front portion of the table secured to the lower leaf, and means for supporting the upper leaf when the table is extended, and a flap or cover hinged to the upper front wall at the leaf-opening toconceal the table when not in use, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a dining-room cabinet, the combination, with a cabinet provided with a lower closet portion having the upper front wall out away, of table-leaves sliding in said opening, hinged to fold together, with supports for the front portion of the tablev secured to gg .l mel-120 the lower leaf, and a bar pivoted to the under surface of the lower leaf for supporting the upper leaf when the table is extended, and a Hap o` cover hinged to the upper front Wall at the leaf-opening to conceal the table when nob'in use, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
SALLIE J. GIVAN.
