COMBINATION BED AND TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 739,990, dated September 29, 1903. Application led J une 4| 1902. Serial No. 110,273.1. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
n Beit known that I, JOHN F. COOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oxnard, in the county of Ventura and State of California, have invented a new and useful Combination Bed and Table, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to combined articles of furniture for the utilization of room and con-v venience in shipping-as, for instance, for camping purposes or for use in residences where space is limited. In such articles it is necessary that compactness andY strength should be combined with lightness and convenience of manipulation.
My invention consists'in a combined bed and table, and has for its object to produce a device of its kind in which theuse of it for one purpose will not interferewith its'use as the other, and in either 'use it will be as convenient as though intended exclusively for that particular purpose.
With this and other objects in view my invention consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement of parts in such an article of furniture, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.v Y Y The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention.
Figure I is a side elevation of my combinedl bed and table, the table being shown in fullv lines and the bed in dotted lines. Fig. IIis a longitudinal'sectional view of Fig. I, the
dotted lines being omitted. Fig. III is a longitudinal sectional view of the device when used as a bed, the position the parts assume in being closed to form a table being shown in dotted lines. Fig. IV is an end view of the device when used as a table. Fig. V is a top .plan view of the device when used as abed. Figs. VI and VII are broken perspective detail views. i
Y In constructing my improved b ed and table I provide a base, which is preferably formed as a frame, in which l l are the side pieces, 2 2 the cross-pieces, and 3 3 the legs or supports. Brace-pieces 4 may be secured to the cross-pieces 2 to give additional rigidity to the frame and also to assist in holding themattress in position. The table-top 5 is pivotally secured to one end of the frame by means of llegs G and hinges 7, which will permit of the top being placed in a horizontal position to form the table or in a vertical y position to form one end of the bed.
IAn auxiliary leg 8 is preferably secured to a cross-piece 9 at one end of the top, which may be folded against the cross-piece when the device is used as a table or it may be extended to rest upon the ground or iioor and support the top when the device is used as a bed. The opposite end of the top is supported upon a frame l0, Which is hinged above the tops of the legs 4 upon extensions ll at that end of the side pieces l. The hinges l2 for connecting the end pieces 13 of the frame With the extensions are so arranged that the frame may be swung outward and permitted'to rest and 9 for supporting the mattress 1G when the device is used for a bed.
'When the frame 10 is raised into its vertical position, the ends 13 will rest'upon the yupper ends of the extensions ll', whereby the frame will be held vertical to act as a support for the free end of the table-top. Said frame 'or support 10 is preferably substantially triangular, one leg of the triangle `abutting laterally against the lower side ofthe table-top in one position of the support, the other leg abutting laterally against the base in the other position of the support. A lock-bar 17 is pivotally secured to the sides of the frame by means oftWo legs 18, so that its ends maybe swung laterally into engagement With two notches or shouldered projections 19, formed or secured upon the inner` sides of two side pieces 20 on the under surface of the table,
said side pieces preferably extending` down IOO swung over into a horizontal position, and the lock-bar is drawn into engagement with the shoulders upon the under side of the top, which will hold thc parts in a rigid position, so that the table can be moved around and used for all the purposes to which the ordinary table is adapted.
To convert the table into a bed, the lock-bar is swung inward until its ends are released from engagement with the shoulders upon the under side of the top, which will permit of the top being moved from its horizontal into a vertical position,l the hinged leg at the end of the top being swung out, so as to afford support for the top. The hinged frame at the opposite end of the supporting-frame is then turned down into a horizontal position, which will stretch the mattress -support in a horizontal position, upon which a mattress can be placed in the ordinary manner. By arranging the pivotal point between the hinged frame and the' upper ends of the extensions above the mattress support when the support is in a horizontal position it is evident that any weight or strain upon the bed will cause the swinging frame to be drawn tightly against the ends of the supporting-frame, and the danger of its swinging over and letting the bed collapse will be avoided. Another advantage of this construction is that the mattress-support l5 is made to pass between and beyond the extensions 1l, so that said extensions act as guards or keepers to retain the bedclothes in place when the device is used for a bed.
If desired, the bed may remain upon the mattress when the top is swung into position to form a table, as the slack in the support caused by swinging the top and the swinging frame into their position to form the table will give sufficient room for the bedding without the necessity of removing it.
To prevent the weight of the bed or mattress from sagging the support down onto the ground or floor, the brace-pieces at the bottom of the supporting-frame will engage with it and hold it at a distance above the floor.
In either case the device can be quickly changed from one use to the other with but little trouble, andwhen so changed it will.v
answer for that purpose as well as though intended exclusively for it. It is peculiarly adapted for camping parties, as it will take up but little space in the tent or where set up; but it can be used equally well in smallroomed houses or where space is an important consideration.
Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l. In a combined bed and table, in combination, a base, a table-top hinged to one end thereof, a frame hinged to the other end thereof, and a mattress-support secured at its ends to the tabletop and said frame, said frame being furnished with a portion adapted to abut against the base and which coperates with its hinges to hold said frame horizontally extended when the device is used for a bed.
