  • a degree to which the amplitude of saturation is adjusted in the hue histogram is determined as follows: if the frequency becomes higher than the boundary value Hh, using as the degree the difference between the boundary value Hh and a vertex of the result of the histogram; and if the frequency becomes lower than the boundary value Hl, using as the degree the difference between the boundary value Hl and the vertex of the result of the histogram. As a result, a degree to which the amplitude is increased, or a degree to which the amplitude is decreased, is determined.
  • a degree to which the amplitude is increased, or a degree to which the amplitude is decreased is determined by use of a ratio between the distance to the boundary value Hh and the distance to the boundary value Hl for each color, the frequency of which stays within the range between the boundary value Hh and the boundary value Hl in the hue histogram.
  • the amplitude of saturation can be adjusted on the basis of both the hue histogram shown in FIG. 8 and the saturation histogram shown in FIG. 9 , which are calculated by the microcomputer 5 .
  • the amplitude of saturation can be increased.
  • the amplitude of saturation can be decreased.
  • effects produced in this embodiment include the capability of displaying an image, the sharpness of color of which is emphasized by making the color brighter.
  • the color correction of chrominance signals Cb, Cr by use of the hue/saturation histograms makes it possible to set the saturation that is most suitable for each color. As a result, it becomes possible to prevent the color from getting thinner, and thereby to prevent the image from being dimmed. It also becomes possible to prevent the color from getting deeper, and thereby to prevent the image from becoming difficult to be seen.
