UNITED STATES Patented July '7, 1903.
PATENT OFFICE.
MAURICE DONALD PO\VERS, OF NVATERTOVJN, NEW YORK.
SPEGIFJIGATION forming part of LettersPatent No. 733,272, dated July 7, 1903.
Application filed May 4,1903. Serial No. 155,694. (No model) To a, whom it may concern:
Be it known that LMAURICE DoNALDPoW- ERS, acitizen of the United States, residing at WVatertown, in the county of Jefferson and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Ourtain Shade and Pole Hanger; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in combined curtain shade and pole hangers; and the object of the invention is to produce an apparatus which may be permanently held to the casing of a window and made adjustable, whereby the device may be adapted to hold shades and curtain-poles of different lengths without necessitating the changing of the bracket-supports, which has a tendency to mar the casing.
More specifically, the invention consists in the provision of an adj ustable, bracket-arm mounted upon a plate adapted to be secured to the casing of a window and in the provision of a flexible pole-supporting arm held to said plate and adapted to clamp and hold poles of different diameters and dispensing with screws for holding the pole to the bracket-arm.
The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention isillustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of my device shown as applied to the casing of a window, a portion of a shade and one end of a curtainpole being illustrated in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is an end View of the device, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the pole-supporting member.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a plate, which may be made of any shape, but in the drawings it is shown as made on the arc of a cylinder and has lugs A projecting from the "opposite longitudinal edges thereof, which lugs are apertured and adapted to receive screws or other fastening means whereby the plate may be attached to the casing of a window. Said plate is longitudinally slotted, as at B, and O designates a bracket-arm having a concaved shank portion 0'', which is apertured to receive a fastening-screw D, which is adapted to pass through the elongated slot in the plate and to receive a threaded nut E, held against the reverse side of the plate. Said bracket-arm has an aperture near its free end adapted to receive the pintle of a shade-roller, and by reason of the elongated slot in the plate said bracket-arm may be held at different locations, adapting the same for holding shade sticks or rollers of different lengths.
Integral with one of the longitudinal edges of said plate is a lug Gr, having two apertures G therein, and K designates a pole-supporting bracket-arm made of a single piece of wire which is bent upon itself, forming a loop N, which is at right angles to the two arms, one of which forms a pole-supporting hook, which is designated by letter M, while the other, M, is flexible and is adapted to be held yieldingly against a pole resting on said hooked arm. A loop R is mounted to have a play upon said arms and as it is pushed toward the ends of said arms is adapted to force the spring against the pole to hold the same securely in place. A plate T, having one of its edges curved, is placed against the loop portion of said bracket-arm, which is bent upon itself, and screws T are passed through said plate and through said loop of the bracket member, the latter having first been placed against the integral lug G, projecting from the edge of the plate, said screws also passing through registering apertures in the lug G and engaged by nuts, which when they are screwed against said lug will securely hold the pole-supporting bracket-arm to said plate. By this apparatus it will be observed that when the plate is once secured to the frame of a window adjustable means is provided at all times for the reception of a curtain-shade and also for the curtain-pole and is adapted for the reception of various lengths of shades and curtain-poles without marring the casing, which is frequently the case where ordinary bracket-arms are fastened in different positions about the casing to receive different lengths of poles and shades. 4
While I have shown a particular detailed construction of the device illustrating my improved shade and curtain-pole hanger, it will be understood that I may make alterations as to details, if found desirable, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A curtain shade and pole holder comprising a metallic plate having an elongated slot adapted to be fastened to a Window-casing, an integral apertured lug projecting from said plate, a pole-supporting bracket comprising a wire bent upon itself forming a loop, an apertured plate in contact with the loop, screws passing through registering apertures in said plate and lug, and loop of said polesnpporting bracket, whereby a bracket may be clamped to the plate, one of the arms of said bracket being flexible, and a loop adapted to hold the adjustable arm in clamping relation with a pole supported byone of the arms of said bracket, as set forth.
2. In combination with the slotted plate adapted for attachment to the casing of a window, integral lugs projecting from said plate and provided with apertures, a polesnpporting bracket-arm comprising a piece of flexible wire bent upon itself forming a loop, one of the arms of said bracket member bent to form a hook for supporting a pole, the other arm being flexible, and a sliding loop mounted upon said arms and adapted to hold the same in clamping relation against the curtain-pole, a plate, and means cooperating with screws for clamping said loop of the pole-supporting bracket against said apertured lug, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MAURICE DONALD POWERS.
