Description

No. mareaA UNITED STATESy Patented July 7, 1903.
PATENT OEEICE.
CoMBlNED MOP AND sonne-BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 732,742, dated July 7, 1903.
Application filed October 10, 1902. Serial No. 126.682. (No model.)
ToaZZ whom it may concern/.f
Beit known that I, AUGUST S. HELD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Freeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Mop and Scrub-Brush, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object the production of combined mops and scrub-brushes so contrived and arranged that they may be used both in such combination and separately; and it consists of certain new and useful features of construction and combinations of parts especially devised to those ends, all as hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figf ure 1 is a top plan view of a combined mop and scrub-brush embodying my invention and adapted to be used both for mopping and scrubbing. Fig. 2 is a section at the dotted line 2 3 in Fig. l of parts there shown. Fig. 3 is a like section, also at such dotted line 2 3 in Fig. 1, showing the movable jaw of the mop-head thrown away from its iixed jaw by means of its controlling-lever in order that the brush-attaching plate thereof, with its brush, may be detached therefrom. Fig. 4 is an isometrical detail of the brush-attaching plate.
Like letters 0f reference indicate corre-v sponding parts throughout the several views.
A is a mop-handle. B B' representa casting composing the fixed-'- A, compressible between the fixed clampingjaw B and slidable ring D and normally acting to force the movable jaw C toward the fixed jaw B. Y p
G is a mop inserted between the jaws B and C. H is a brush-attaching plate, having one edge portion H thereof bent in trough-like form, preferably substantially U-shaped in cross-section, to adapt it to admit thereinto the movable jaw C and portion G' of the mop G looped thereover and provided with transversely-projecting lugs H2 bestriding the central portion of the fixed jaw B to prevent the plate I-I from tilting.
I is a scrub-brush secured by means of screws I to the brush-attaching plate H.
Figs. 1 toV 3,inclusive, represent the utensil usable both as a scrub-brush andas a mop. Obviously if the movable jaw C be released by swinging the free end of the lever E away from the handle A, as in Fig. 3, the brush may be detached therefrom and both brush and mop will become available for use separately.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1.y In a utensil of the class described, in combination, a handle with a lixed clampingjaw fast thereto, a movable clamping-jaw parallel with the Iixed jaw-having its ends extending and converging rearwardly and united by connecting means, releasable means for clamping the movable jaw against the ixed'jaw, a mop inserted between the jaws and looped over the movable jaw, a brush-attaching plate having one edge portionthereof bent in trough-like form-pref erably substantially U-shaped in cross-section-to adapt it to ladmit thereinto the movable jaw and portion of the mop looped'thereover, and a scrub-brush secured tothe brush- 'attaching plate, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a utensil of the. class described, in combination, a handlewith axed clamping jaw fast thereto, al movable clamping-jaw parallel with the fixed jaw-having its ends extending and converging rearwardly and united by connecting means, releasable means for clamping the movable jaw against lo xed jaw, and a scrub-brush secured to the brush-attaching plate, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnessesl' AUGUST S. HELD.
Witnesses:
JOHN M. IRWIN, W. H. J. STRATTON.
