SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 732,127, dated June 30, 1 903. Application filed October 2, 1902. Serial No. 125,626. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EUGENE 0. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, countybracket may be placed in position near a door to enable a chair or baby-jumper to be attached to the same to permit a child to swing and move about along the floor and whereby said bracket may be readily removed, so as not to offer an obstruction in the doorway.
In carrying out my invention I provide a bracket or arm with pivots that are supported by jaws or clamping-pieces having means for causing them to grasp the framework around a door or the like, whereby the bracket can.
be placed in position and supported without the use of nails, screws, or the like.
The devices I have illustrated comprise means for enabling a firm connection to'be made with frames of different sizes, whereby the device is adapted to be readily applied to various-sized door-frames.
The invention also comprises the novel details of improvement that will be more fully hereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of my improved bracket or support in position upon the casing or frame of a doorway. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2 in Fig. 1 looking in the direct-ion of the arrows.

In the drawings the numeral l indicates generally the frame or casing of a door, which may be of any suitable form usually found in dwellings. I
2 indicates a bracket or arm adapted to be pivotally supported adjacent to casing 1, and in the form shown the bracket comprises a metallic angle-frame 3, having sockets at opposite ends, to which are attached bars 3 3", which may be 'secured to the bracket by inserting the ends of the bars into the sockets of the angle-frame 3 and securing them by screws or the like. The angle-frame 3 may be made of a casting or of two-part sheet metal stamped and bent to shape and the two parts secured together. The parts 3, 3, and 3 constitute generally the bracket or swinging arm, and for increasing the strength of the arm 3 a brace 4 may be provided, that extends between the bars 3" 3 In said figure the brace 4 is shown secured to the bars 3 3 by bolts 5. The angle frame 3 and the bar 3 are shown pi'votally supported, so that the bar 3 may be swung laterally back and forth. To this end I have shown the angle-frame 3 as provided with a pivot 6,

- 3, and 4 the clamp-piece 8 is shown having its two ends bent laterally, so as to respectively bear against wthe edges 1 1 of the frame 1, the clamp-piece 8 thereby extending across the frame near the angle or edge 1 of the same, whereby the clamp-piece is hung upon the frame.
To avoid using nails or screws for securing the clamp-piece 8 toframe 1, I provide an adjustable holding or grasping device, which, as illustrated, comprises a plate or casting 9,

having a tongue 9 extending at an angle thereto and preferably of angular form, so as to fit in the corner of the doorway 1, as at l, diagonally from the corner 1. (See Fig. 3.)
The grasping piece or plate 9 is provided with means for connecting it with the clamp orjaw 8 for drawing the two pieces toward each other, whereby the piece 8 is firmly held on the door-frame, and to this end I have shown the clamp-piece 9 provided with a standard 9, to which is pivotally connected a lever 10, to which a chain or similar flexible connection 11 is attached. I have shown the chain 11 as connected with the lever 10 eccentrically by means of a stud or pin 10, arranged eccentrically with relation to the pivot 10. The chain or the like 11 is also connected with the clamp-piece 8, and thereby when the parts 8 and 9 are placed in proper position against the door-frame and the lever 10 is operated the'chain 11 will be stretched, and thereby the parts 8 and 9 will be drawn firmly against the door-frame toward each other, whereby they will be clamped rigidly in position. To provide for various dimensions and sizes of door-frames, I have shown means for adjustably connecting the chain 11 with the clamp-pieces, and to this end the clamppiece Sis provided with flanges or webs S having apertures at distances apart adapted to'receive a pin 12, which pin is adapted to be connected to the chain or the likell at various points of the latter, according to the distances that the parts 8 and 9 are required to be separated in order to properly grasp the frame 1, suitable slack being left in the chain while the parts 8 and 9 are being adjusted in position, and then the lever 10 will be turned to draw the parts 8 and 9 toward each other to clamp them firmly to the door-frame.
The lower end of the bracket is to be connected to the frame 1 substantially in the manner described with respect to the upper end, and for this purpose I have shown a pivot 13, extending from the lower end of bar 3 and swiveled in a clamping piece or jaw 1 having an extension or finger 14 adapted to rest at the edge 1 of the door-frame (see Fig. 6) substantially in manner similar to the clamping-piece 8. The clamping piece or jaw 14 has an extension 14", provided with an aperture to receive the pivot 13,whereby the latter is guided,and thebar 3 maybe swiveled therein. Means for securing the clamping-piece let to the door-frame are provided substantially similar as that described with respect to the parts 9 10, &c., and wherein a clamping-piece 15 is provided with a prong or edge 15,adapted torestagainsttheedgel of thedoor-frame,(see Fig. 6,) and the clamping-piece 15 is provided with a standard 15 to which a lever 16 is pivoted, the lever 16 having an eccentric-pin 16, to which a chain or similar connection 17 is attached, the chain 17 being adapted to be adjustably connected with the clamping-piece 14 by means of a pin 18, arranged similarly to. the pin 12 with respect to the clampingpiece 8, the pin 18 being received in apertures in lugs 19 on the clamping-piece 1 1. Thus when the parts 14: and 15 are applied in the proper positions to frame 1 and the desired length of chain 17 adjusted the lever 16 may be swung to stretch the chain, and thereby draw the parts 14 and 15 toward each other, and thus firmly clamp said parts to the doorframe.
When the parts 8 9 and 14: 15 are secured to the doorframe, as described, and the bracket or swinging arm or frame pivotally connected therewith, the arm or bar 3 may be swung laterally toward and from the door. By the arrangement shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the bar 3 will be supported near the upper frame of the door; but if it is desired that the swinging frame or bracket shall be supported at a lower position clamping-pieces, like 14 and 15, may be used at the upper end in place of the clamping- pieces 8 and 9, which are adjusted to the angles of the door-frame, the pivot 6 of the angle-frame 3 being adjusted to the upper clamping-piece 14 in manner similar to its adjustment in connection with the clamping-piece 8.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings I have shown a yoke 20 pivotally connected with the arm or bar 3" and provided with hooks or other supports 21, from which a suitable object may be suspended, the yoke 20 being shown supported upon a pivot or the like 22, carried by the bar 3. The yoke 20 is preferably connected with bar 3 so as to move back and forth along said bar, and the bar 3 is preferably provided with a longitudinallyextending vertically-disposed slot 3 in which the pivot 22 is adapted to travel, the 'upper end of the pivot being connected with one or more rollers or trolley wheels 23, adapted to ride upon the upper surface of bar 3. By this means the yoke is not only pivotally supported to swing on its transverse central axis, but has movement along the bar 3 in addition'to the sidewise or lateral movement of the yoke permitted by the swinging of the bar 3 upon the pivots 6 and 13.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The combination of a bracket, clampingjaws having members adapted to extend along the sides of a door-frame, connections between the members of each pair of jaws for drawing them toward each other to grasp said frame, and pivots for supporting the bracket upon corresponding jaws, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a bracket, clampingjaws arranged in pairs adapted to engage the edges of a door-frame or the like, adjustable connections between the members of each pair of jaws for causing the jaws to grasp the frame, and pivots connecting the bracket with corresponding jaws, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a bracket, clam pingjaws arranged in pairs, one jaw of each pair having a lever, a connection between said lever and the other jaw of each pair, whereby the jaws maybe adj ustably connected with ICC 5. The combination of a bracket, clampingjaws arranged in pairs, one jaw of each pair having a lever, a connection extending from said lever, means for attaching said connection to the other jaw, means for adjusting the relative length of said connection between the jaws, and pivots connecting the bracket with corresponding jaws, substantially as described.
