TROUSERS-STRETOHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 1'7, 1910.
Application filed February 25, 1909. Serial N 0. 479,970.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT P. BAIRD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Berry, in the county of Harrison and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Trousers- Stretchers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to trousers stretchers, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a simple device for the purpose referred to which will hold trousers in folded and stretched condition by means of springs and clamps.
Another object of the invention is to provide a spring trousers stretcher in which the tension of the springs may be readily adjusted and in which the stretcher as a whole may be either lengthened or shortened, as required for different lengths of trousers.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a trousers stretcher made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan View.
Referring to the drawing, the numerals 1 designate the stretcher rods, the upper ends of which are provided with loops 2 for the connection of a suspending chain 3. Journaled near the upper ends of the rods 1 is a roller 4 over which the trousers are adapted to be folded. The lower ends of the rods 1 extend loosely through a bar 5, and surrounding each of the rods 1 is a spiral spring 6, the lower ends of which bear against the bar 5, while their upper ends are in contact with stop collars 7 adjustable upon the rods 1 and held in adjusted position by means of binding screws 8. Stop blocks 9 through which the rods 1 pass are provided with binding screws 10 to provide adjustment of the bar 5 relatively to the roller 4 for longer or shorter trousers. A clamp member 11 provided with an elongated slot 12 at one end and a shorter slot 13 at the other end is connected to the bar 5 by means of pins 14 extending through the slots 12 and 13 and into the bar 5, the shanks of said pins permitting movement to the clamp bar 11.
pins 18, until the trousers have The operation of my trousers stretcher maybe briefly described as follows: To adjust the bar 5 upon the members 1 to compensate for the length of the trousers, the set screws 10 are loosened, and the binding screws 8 are also loosened, thus permitting the bar 5, the springs'and the collars 7 to be adjusted toward or from the roller 4. After the adjustment has been made and the collars 7 are secured to the members 1 the trousers are passed around the roller 4, and the waist band is connected between the clamp bar 11 and the bar 5 by moving the bar 11 to one side until the pin 14 is out of the slot 13. After the trousers have been placed in position the clamp bar 11 is swung back in place. The trousers are pulled over the roller 4, and the bottoms of the legs are connected between the clamp 15 and the bar 5 by swinging said clamp upon one of the been properly placed, after which the clamp bar is swung back into position and connected with the pins 18. In this position the trousers are stretched by means of the springs 6, the roller 4 equalizing the stretching action.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that my invention, while simple in construction, is eflicient in operation and may be manufactured at slight cost.
I claim The herein described trousers stretcher comprising a bar, rods extending through said bar near the opposite ends thereof, a roller journaled near the outer ends of said rods, a suspending chain connected to the ends of said rods, springs encircling said rods and bearing at one end against said bar and at their opposite ends against adj ustable stops, adjustable stop collars mounted on said rods and provided with means for holding them rigidly to said rods, slotted clamps upon opposite sides of said bar, and pins passing through said slots and connected to said bar.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT P. BAIRD.
