Description

PATENTED OCT. 17, 1905.
S. PIERRO.
ADJUSTABLE HORIZONTAL BAR.
APPLICATION FILED APR.8,1905.
SAVERIO PIERRO, OF NEW YORK, N.
ADJUSTABLE HOFilZONTAIL BAR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 17', 1905.
Application filed April 8, 1905. Serial No. 254,568-
To all w/mm it nuty concern:
Be it known that I, SAVERIO PIERRO, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Adjustable Horizontal Bars; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in horizontal bars, and has particular reference to that class of exercising paraphernalia adapted for outdoor and home use.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of this character which combines stability, simplicity, and ease of erection in any private house or public place without the use of cumbersome tools or instruments, and, on the other hand, to provide a bar of this class the individual elements of which may be readily and speedily disassociated and the entire apparatus taken down and stored away without any laborious expenditure of efi ort.
it consists, primarily, in simple suspending means, if in a house, from the lintel of a door, and suitable mechanism for clamping the device at any desired height onto the jamb of the door, therefore preventing any oscillatory motion of the device when placed in position for use.
It consists, furthermore, in such features,
details of construction, and combination of parts as will appear more fully from the accompanying drawings and then more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the entire apparatus in position for use; Fig. 2, a vertical section of the means for clamping the device to thelintel of a door; Fig. 3, a longitudinal section of the means for supporting the bar, and Fig. 41 adetail sectional view of the mechanism for permitting of the vertical adjustment of the bar.
Referring in detail to the drawings, 1 is the lintel of the door, having on each side the usual molding, upon which rests the two sets of gripping-hooks 2. These hooks or clamping-jaws are located within a U-shaped frame or bracket 3 and are pivotally mounted therein upon a plate 1, resting upon the bottom of the frame and being firmly secured in place by bolts 5, extending through the bottom of the frame and base-plate 4:. These bolts 5 also serve to secure two depending ears 6, which are arranged to clampthe suspendingrods 8 and 9 from the lintel of the door. The gripping-jaws 2, located within the U-shaped frame, are actuated by one or more thumbscrews 7, which extend through the upright arms of the frame and impinge against said jaws. In this manner the jaws are tightly held in place and are prevented from accidentally releasing their grip or their hold on the vertical supporting-bar above. The rods which are suspended by the ears 6 are joined at or about their extremity to a turnbuckle 16. For this purpose the correspondingears of each of these rods are provided with screwthreads which engage the screw-threaded By means of this sockets of the turnbuckle. device the entire apparatus when not already secured in the desired position can be either raised or lowered by simply revolving the buckle in either direction, as the case'rnay be, in order to change the height of the horizontal bar.
The lower rods 9 have loosely mounted in their extremity in the manner desired carrying means for the horizontal bar to be em-- ployed, which in this instance consists of an inverted-U-shaped frame 10, which is arranged to snugly fit over the boss 11, Fig. 3, which carries and supports the horizontal bar 12. This boss is fastened to a suitable clamping member or frame 13, said frame being adapted to snugly engage the jamb of the door upon which it is intended to be fitted and then secured in place by a set or thumb screw 15, extending through one of its walls. In this manner it is obvious that any oscillatory motion of the horizontal bar when in use by the exerciser is impossible, and it is likewise to be seen that by releasing the thumb-screw 15 the entire horizontal bar 12,with its attendant fastening means, may be vertically adjusted by manipulation of the turnbuckle.
By providing one of the ends of each of the rods 8 and 9,which constitute a sectional suspending member, with screw-threads and fitting them into a turnbuckle the horizontal bar 12 may be readily adjusted to any height.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a pair of suspending members, movable jaws secured to the upper ends of said suspending member, means for adjusting said jaws, a clamping member carried by the lower end of each of said suspending members, and a horizontal bar connected to said suspending and clamping members.
2. In adevice of the character described, the combination with adjustable, sectional supporting members, clamping-jaws secured to one end of each of said members, a clamping member secured to the opposite end of each of said members, and a horizontal bar interposed between and carried by said sectional members.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a pair of substantially parallel suspending members, each member comprising rods, a turnbuckle connecting said rods, ears secured to the upper end of each of said members, a substantially U-shaped frame secured to the ears of each of said members, a plate carried by said U-shaped frame, clampingjaws pivotally mounted upon said plate, means for adjusting said jaws, ears secured to the lower end of each of said suspending members, an inverted, substantially U shaped frame carried by the ears of each of said suspending members, a horizontal clamping member carried by each of the inverted, substantially U-shaped frames, each clamping member provided with a boss positioned between said substantially U-shaped frames, and a horizontal bar supported by the bosses of said clamping members.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination with suspending means, of pivotally-mounted clamping-jaws engaging said suspending means, means for securing said aws in an adjusted position, and a hori' zontal bar carried by said suspending means.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination with suspending means, of a horizontal bar carried by said suspending means, clamping means engaging the ends of said horizontal bars, and adjustable jaws engaging said suspending means.
6. In a device of the character described, the combination of adjustable clampingjaws, means for securing said jaws in a fixed position, suspending means carried by said jaws, a bar carried by said suspending means, and means for preventing said bar from swmgmg.
7. In a device of the character described, the combination of sectional, suspending members, means for adjusting the sections of said suspending members, clamping means carried by the ends of each of said suspending members, and a bar carried by said suspending members.
8. In a device of the character described, the combination of adjustable, suspending members, clamping means secured near each end of said members, and a bar carried by said suspending members.
9. In a device of the character described, the combination with a plurality of suspending members, clamping means engaging the ends of each of said suspending members, and a bar carried by said suspending members.
10. In a device of the character described, the combination with a frame, of a horizontal bar positioned between said frame, means for vertically adjusting said bar within said frame, and clamping means secured upon said frame near each end of said bar for preventing swinging movement thereof, said clamping means comprising members partly surrounding portions of said frames.
11. In a device of the character described, the combination with a frame, of clamping means engaging the upper portion of said frame, adjustable, suspending means carried by said clamping means, a bar carried by said suspending means, and means for preventing swinging movement of said bar.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
